Knitted hearts beat again for separated families
and the other to their family, thus creating a physical bond. “It is incredibly difficult to be away from loved ones during the pandemic and we have re- ceived such positive feedback about the real difference these little hearts can make. “We have been told the hearts are very effective and often they are used when patients are on video calls so that they can each see the heart and give them a squeeze.” The project first launched in April 2020 and continued throughout the year, with hun- dreds of hearts donated to Bournemouth, Southampton and Lymington hospitals as well as St Georges’ Hospital in Milford and Oakhaven Hospice. Terry said: “We made our last delivery of hearts to Lymington hospital in December and at that point we were looking at winding down the project. “But with the latest lock- down announcement we are all set to swing back into action to start knitting again.
“As well as the Rotary and WI members we have also been supported by several individual knitters who heard about the project and wanted to be in- volved. “We are able to provide pat- terns for the hearts and we have been using Rotary funds to buy the wool we need.” Originally inspired by the idea of Sister Laura Deacon, who works at the Great West- ern Hospital’s intensive care unit in Swindon, the project aims to make the matching hearts as colourful and cheerful as possible. Elsewhere in the country the hearts have also been provided to families with babies in neo- natal units, to enable siblings to have a physical link with each other. Once completed, the hearts are paired in plastic bags and stored for 72 hours to ensure they are sterile before distribu- tion to patients. Keepsakes created to unite patients and their relatives

A TEAM of New Forest knit- ters are set to restart a project which has provided hundreds of handmade hearts to symbol- ically unite hospital patients and their relatives separated by the pandemic. The project, led by Becton Rotary Club with help from Lymington Rotary and Milford WI, has donated 420 pairs of the knitted keepsakes to people in wards and care home residents since the first national lock - down. Project co-ordinator Terry Conner, of Becton Rotary Club, explained: “The hearts are knit- ted and bagged in pairs, so that one can be given to the patient GODSHILLCP WOODGREENCP HALECP BREAMORECP FORDINGBRIDGE, GODSHILL & HYDE TWELVE district council seats have been recommended for the axe as the redrawing of the New Forest’s political map en- ters its final stages. The proposal to cut New For- est District Council to 48 mem- bers across 26 wards is part of the Local Government Bound- ary Commission’s final draft on the changes. It will now go to parliament for a final decision and, if ac - cepted, the changes will come into effect for the next district council elections in 2023. Prof. Colin Mellors, commis- sion chair, said: “We believe the new arrangements will guar- antee electoral fairness while maintaining local ties.” The commission said the final draft largely comprises what it proposed in a previous draft apart from changes proposed by district councillors on the Waterside. Covering Hythe, there will now be three two-councillor wards: Dibden & Dibden Pur- lieu, Hythe Central, and Hythe South. There were also a few changes to ward boundaries and ward names. The commission said: “Our final recommendations are for six single-councillor wards, 18 two-councillor wards and two three-councillor wards. “We consider that our final recommendations will provide for good electoral equality while reflecting community identities and interests where we received such evidence during consulta- tion.” In coming to its final rec - ommendation the commis- sion resisted opposition from some Lymington residents and councillors unhappy with SOPLEYCP RINGWOODCP ELLINGHAM,HARBRIDGE AND IBSLEYCP W X V RINGWOOD NORTH & ELLINGHAM RINGWOOD SOUTH HYDECP GODSHILLCP WOODGREENCP HALECP SOPLEYCP RINGWOODCP ELLINGHAM,HARBRIDGE AND IBSLEYCP FORDINGBRIDGE CP BREAMORECP W X V FORDINGBRIDGE, GODSHILL & HYDE RINGWOOD NORTH & ELLINGHAM RINGWOOD SOUTH HYDECP GODSHILLCP OODGREENCP HALECP SOPLEYCP RINGWOODCP ELLINGHAM,HARBRIDGE AND IBSLEYCP FORDINGBRIDGE CP BREAMORECP X V F I I E, S ILL & HYDE RINGWOOD NORTH & ELLINGHAM I S UTH FORDINGBRIDGE CP
