jewel lilies exbury gardens
A WORLD famous collection of rare lilies will be on display at Ex - bury Gardens until the first week of November. The dazzling blooms – known as nerine sarniensis or jewel lilies – are renowned for their eye-catching petals which refract the light to give a sparkling appearance. The Exbury collection, on show within the Five Arrow Gallery, con - tains 1,000 different shades of the unusual flowers which were first bred by the attraction’s founder, Lionel de Rothchild, more than a century ago. The collection was continued by Sir Peter Smithers for two decades in Switzerland, before returning to Exbury around 25 years ago. Head Gardener Thomas Clarke said: “The Rothschild family has a unique history of amassing many world-famous collections, through the arts to natural history. “The collection of nerines at Ex - bury brings this story up to date with by far the world’s largest col -
lection of its kind of these enigmat - ic and beautiful bulbs. “The very best of these are now on show at Exbury Gardens giving our visitors the chance to get close to these amazing little plants.” Jewel lilies were discovered in the 1600s in the mountains around Cape Town in South Africa. Originally orange, thesemembers of the amaryllis family now flower in a spectrum of colours from deep - est purple to purest white with gold or silver coloured flecks that make their petals refract light in the sun - shine or under spotlights, which gives their signature glitter. Nick de Rothschild, Lionel’s grandson and the current custodi- an of the collection, has produced many new hybrids, some on sale to the public. Visitors can also explore Exbury Gardens’ 200 acres in full autumn colour. Admission to the Five Ar - row Gallery is included in the gar- den’s entry price. Visit www.exbury. co.uk
