Ref Gary set for emotional return in cup final match
Bashley’s Currie awarded rookie contract extension
LOCAL referee Gary Parsons is anticipating an emotional return when he takes charge of his first game since being diagnosed with cancer. Gary, who lives in Hordle, will be in the middle for the Russell-Cotes Cup final between Lymington Town and Sholing on Tuesday, writes Neil Perrett. He was appointed by the Hampshire Football Associa- tion in February, three months before discovering he had cancer of the bowel and lymph nodes. Gary had his fourth course of chemotherapy on Monday and fully expects to shake off the after-effects in time to officiate the big match at Sholing’s Universal Stadium. He is a level one referee and is also qualified to take charge of games in the EFL, National League and Premier League 2. Gary has temporarily put his refereeing career on hold while he undergoes treatment and is also signed off from his job as a transport manager for NMS which is based in Caird Avenue, New Milton. Among the crowd at Sholing will be Gary’s wife Louisa, sons Gary Junior, 16, and 13-year-old Finn together with his father Gary Senior and several members of the local refereeing fraternity. Gary told the A&T: “I’ll be ready but I know it will be an emotional evening. It’s brilliant to be given this opportunity with the help of the Hampshire FA.
HAMPSHIRE Cricket has announced that promising youngster Scott Currie has signed a rookie contract extension. Poole-raised all-rounder Currie, who plays for Bashley Cricket Club, put pen-to- paper on the new deal which will keep him in the county fold until at least the end of 2021. Currie made his Hampshire debut in the club’s 2020 Vitality Blast campaign, while also going on to feature in the inaugural Bob Willis Trophy, where he claimed three wickets on his debut against Kent. He also became the latest Hampshire youth player to go on to represent England’s under-19 side last winter, having impressed as part of the triumphant Hampshire Second XI Championship side in 2019. The news came with the announcement that two other prospects, Ajeet Dale and Tom Scriven, have also signed extensions.

Hampshire of cricket, Giles White, said: “Scott, Ajeet and Tom are three really exciting prospects for the future and they’ve all shown their potential this summer. “This extension of their rookie contracts will aid their development, allowing them to continue their hard work over the next 12 months.” director

“I’m still not sure whether I will get back to refereeing at the same level. I don’t know whether my body will allow it or if I’ll be fit enough. “I was appointed in February before lockdown. The Hampshire FA have been in contact to ask how I am and have fitted in the game with my good week. “It’s going to be great to have the chance to do a game and to enjoy it at a time when we don’t know what the future holds.” Gary, who also manages Hordle Spurs U16s, last took charge of a game in March when he was in the middle for Dover’s 1-1 draw with Chester- field in the National League.

Explaining his diagnoses came about, Gary said: “I’ve been giving blood for 10 years and, the last time I went, they wouldn’t take it because they said my levels were wrong. “As I’d never had a problem before, I went to see my doctor and he ran an MOT on me. Nothing drastic showed up but, to put my mind at rest, he suggested a camera because my iron levels were down. “I had a colonoscopy in May and it showed a stage four how
tumour in my right bowel. Further tests showed it was cancerous. “They operated to remove the right side of my bowel along with my appendix and the lymph nodes. They managed to join it back up so I don’t need a bag. “More tests were carried out and it turned out I had cancer in the lymph nodes as well, which is why I’m having chemotherapy. “I had my fourth course on Monday and, fingers crossed, I
am having the last course just after Christmas. “It was a huge shock for me and the family. Everybody kept telling me I didn’t tick any of the boxes, I was a fit and active guy and everything would be okay. “As if Covid wasn’t enough to make you realise how things can change. My life is on hold. I’m not working, there is no football and it’s a waiting game.” To donate to Bowel Cancer UK go to bit.ly/3nV4oAG

Sailing Durlston sailors have wind back in their sails
RLymYC appoint new youth coach
Hale Gardens serves up annual champs Mixed doubles winners Jan Courtney and Thomas Lean
DURLSTON Court Prep School sailors turned up good results at the South and South West Regional Junior Championships at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. In the Tera competition, Max Tait, sailing with Royal Lymington Yacht Club’s Sam Pontifract, dealt exceptionally well with the challenging weather conditions to finish first. On Saturday, current and former Durlston pupils took on children three years older in the U16 Feva competition. Max came 19th out of 39 Fevas, Harry West and Daniel Vaughan came 22nd, and Sean Jardine and ex-Durlstonian Rebecca Vaughan came 35th. For full results go to bit.ly/ 373bwoC
ROYAL Lymington Yacht Club has announced British Sailing’s former coach of the year Hugh Styles as their new head coach for the junior and youth fleets. Lymington-based Hugh has 25 years’ experience in coaching, mentoring and programme management. He has coached at the highest levels including the Olympics with British Sailing’s foiling Nacra 17 and Laser Radial classes. He also served on the RYA youth racing committee, and he was the head GB coach to the Youth Sailing World Championships. In 2019, he was voted British Sailing coach of the year. RLymYC junior captain, Sarah Richards, said: “We are very excited by this appointment. The Royal Lymington Yacht Club is very fortunate to be able to call on Hugh’s experience to inspire our sailors at the club. Hugh will start his role during October and will be working with the different
HALE Gardens Lawn Tennis Club recently held its annual club championships in unusual circumstances due to the need for Covid-safe restrictions. The measures had little impact, and the majority of the games were highly competitive. The Ladies’ Singles Championship was won by Lucy Morgan who beat Amy Josey in a tense three-setter with many long rallies. The game could have gone either way, but Lucy eventually won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Jan Courtney and Carol Minnion teamed up to win the Ladies’ Doubles Championship, beating Jill Jeffery and Veronica Leicester 6-1, 6-2 with a score that failed to reflect the competitive nature of the match. The men’s doubles final was a spectacular display of hard-hitting volleys and groundstrokes with father-and- son duo John and Thomas Lean beating Jay Tarrant and Matt Bartlett in the third set 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The mixed doubles was another very entertaining game
which went to three sets, with Jan Courtney and Thomas Lean eventually beating Caz Deacon and Rob West 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Thomas Lean could not play the men’s singles final after beating Jay Tarrant in a thrilling semi-final due to his involvement in the men’s and mixed doubles. There were only so many games the talented Thomas could play in one day. The final against Luke Rivoire will be played at a later date. Other results included the over-60s mixed doubles where husband-and-wife team Carol and Nick Minnion beat Doris Gethings and Keith Bates 6-4, 6-3. The over-60s ladies and men’s events were run as a box league with Nick Minnion and Hisham Rashed topping the leader board in the men’s, and Pam Bullen and Doris Gethings in the women’s. The over-60s singles between Stanley Dencher and Keith Bates has yet to be played. The club extends its thanks to head coach James Lilley for organising the event.
