T his time last year, you were probably looking forward to Christmas and had never heard of COVID-19. This year, however, we’re all facing a very different kind of festive season. With guidelines changing so often to keep pace with infection rates in different areas, one thing we’ve all had to do is be flexible and adaptable.
bake biscuits with the kids to deliv- er to a friend’s door. Helping oth- ers is scientifically proven to boost our own mood too. Give gifts that mean something Every Christmas, millions of presents in the UK end up being re-gifted or donated to charity. Keep this in mind if you’re feel- ing under pressure to buy gifts for everyone you know. Research into the psychology of gift giving shows that personal, handmade presents, an experience, or a spe- cially created playlist often say a lot more than a shop-bought present. After a tough year, showing some- one that you really know and ap- preciate them will mean a lot. Seek help with money worries Struggling with money can have a severe impact on our mental health, especially at this time of year. Don’t let your Christmas be filled with worry – get help today by contacting an organisation like CAP for free debt help. You can call CAP on 0800 328 0006 or visit capuk.org to find out more.
Carers needed For small ‘Covid Free’ care home in Barton on Sea. Experienced and non experienced can apply as full training will be given. Flexible hours. Full or part-time. Contact 07803 294134 or 07901 557060
be a great way to keep everyone entertained during the Christmas holidays. Why not search online for some new activities so that you can socialise and stay safe at the same time? Or, even better, set up your own! Sing your heart out Research by the University of East Anglia found that singing boosts our mental wellbeing. Sad- ly, it looks like the restrictions on singing in groups will put a stop- per on carol services this year, but why not check out what’s happen- ing online in your area through community Facebook pages, or do a Google search for your local church? Having a good sing-along from your sofa means that you can be as loud and as silly as you like while still enjoying some commu- nity spirit. Help others For many, this winter may be a very lonely time, so it’s important that we find ways to connect and help one another out. We may not be allowed to invite friends or neighbours over to the house, but there are other ways to bless them. Perhaps you could do a food shop for an elderly neighbour, or Opportunity Could this be the year you seek out new career opportunities? Perhaps the pandemic has left you out of work, or you feel it’s time for a career change in 2021. There’s a lot of support out there to help with getting the qualifica - tions, skills or training you may need. This includes free college courses to boost your qualifi - cations and skills. Most courses under the Government’s Life - time Skills Guarantee are availa- ble from April. In the meantime, have a look at what’s on offer through your local further educa- tion college. If you’re not sure what skills you already have, or what you need for the types of jobs avail- able, get advice. Your local CAP Job Club can help you identify and maximise your skills, and help to pinpoint any gaps, so that you can take steps towards a new career to increase your income. Retraining as an adult may seem like a challenge but remember that lots of people are in the same boat and you will not How can you build deep and lasting friendships with others? After many months of social distancing, your connections with other people may have felt different from what you’re used to. Maybe you’ve lost your job and work friendships along with it. Or maybe you’ve built new connections with the neighbours on your street through helping each other out with shopping de- liveries. Professor Dunbar at Oxford University has reported that it’s be alone. People
What does this mean for Christ- mas though? We’ve all been af- fected by the pandemic, but we’re not all in the same boat. Some of us may still be able to buy gifts online and have a small family celebration with members of our own household. Others may be bravely facing their first Christmas without loved ones. Wherever we are and whatever situation we’re facing, there are steps we can take to prioritise our mental health and wellbeing. Get a move on Being less active can really affect our health mentally and physical- ly. For those who are able, getting outdoors to enjoy a walk wrapped up in winter woolies can be just the tonic. The NHS has some great ide- as for armchair exercises and oth- er fitness tips for those who aren’t able to get outdoors. See nhs.uk/ live-well/exercise/sitting-exercises. Stay connected We may not be able to socialise in the way we’re used to but it’s amazing how many different social groups you can join from the com- fort of your own home, from book clubs and cooking classes to good old family quiz nights. These could struggling with problem debt and, no matter how challenging their situation may be, we know there’s always hope. We firmly believe this because we’ve met thousands of people who felt their money problems were hopeless. Now debt free, they’ve seen a genuine difference, had their hope restored, and feel more positive after getting help from CAP. Hope signals the beginning of change so, with this in mind, let’s look at some of the positive changes we can make as we step into 2021 with HOPE. Health How can you make getting healthy easy and achievable? There are some great resourc- es and tools out there to help with improving health and well- being. See nhs.uk/live-well/ for a range of ideas aimed at adults or nhs.uk/change4life for great tips for families. Whatever you’re trying to achieve, break down your ul- timate goal into a daily habit for success. For instance, if you dream of getting fit enough to run a marathon, then starting a daily habit of running for just ten minutes a day will get you closer to your ultimate goal. Willpower alone can only achieve so much. As well as cre- ating achievable goals, having support from a community will make the most difference. Look for support groups in your area, or ask a friend to keep you ac- countable.

Local press three times more trusted than social media
Staying connected with oth- ers, even if through a screen, has helped many people realise that they’re not as alone or isolated as they may feel. So send that text, send that email or make that call to stay in touch. Emergency funds Is it time to start building up savings for a rainy day? You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘saving for a rainy day’, and this is something we’re pas- sionate about at CAP. Even just a few pounds a month soon builds up to create a buffer for unex - pected events. Remember, saving isn’t just about putting money away. It can also mean paying less for particular products or services. Take some time to look at what you can realistically cut out com- pletely – for example, are you still paying Direct Debits for services that you no longer use? Next, think about where you could cut back, such as limiting yourself to a treat night once a month instead of weekly. Could you reduce a multi-screen Netflix subscription to the cheaper sin- gle-screen option? Finally, consider where you can cut costs. We all know about trying to get reduced prices for energy and mobile phones, but have a look at the other services you use. Taking the time to seek out better deals can be time well spent and money well saved. For more top money saving tips, visit moneysavingexpert.com.
