■ By Glynn Williams MBE, Motoring Correspondent INEOS Automotive, the new car manufacturing arm of the global group chaired by New Forest bil- lionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has bought a French car plant from Mercedes- Benz to build its new Grenadier 4x4. a modern automotive manufac- turing facility with a world-class workforce. “Ineos Automotive set out a vision to build the world’s best util- itarian 4x4, and at our new home in Hambach, we will do just that.” One of Europe’s most modern automotive manufacturing sites with the added attraction in this age of switching to electric propul- sion of already making the electric EQ smart cars, Hambach is home to a highly experienced and capa- ble workforce.

Under the terms of the acquisi- tion, Mercedes-Benz will contract Ineos to continue to produce the electric smart EQ fortwo and some Mercedes-Benz components at Hambach. When combined with Ineos’s plans for the Grenadier, this translates into some 1,300 jobs at Hambach, including commitments to onsite suppliers. Ineos Automotive chief exec- utive officer Dirk Heilmann said: “This acquisition marks our biggest milestone yet in the devel- opment of the Grenadier. “Alongside the exhaustive test- ing programme that our prototype vehicles are now undergoing, we can now begin preparations at Hambach to build our 4x4 from late next year for delivery to our customers around the globe.” Recently Ineos agreed a deal with Hyundai to develop and pro- mote hydrogen fuel cell-generated electric propulsion for cars. ■

The company, which originally planned to assemble the Grenadier cars at a £600m new plant at Bridgend in South Wales with chassis production in Portugal, had been in talks with Mercedes to buy the Smart car production facil- ity for several months. It has now been confirmed that the plant at Hambach has been acquired and there are plans to start building the Grenadier 4x4 there in late 2021 – a move secur- ing the future of the site and safe- guarding some 1,300 jobs.
