2020: Covid, disposable BBQs and Nelson’s mistress January

Mr Wallrock researched the item and confirmed it was one of four studies of Lady Hamilton produced by Westall. It is now for sale for £85,000. August STUDENTS receiving their A-level results won praise for their “resilience and adaptabil- ity” following an exam season like no other. Due to the coronavirus pan- demic they were unable to sit exams so the results were calcu- lated on the basis of mock tests, predicted grades and assess- ments by teachers, followed by the government’s algorithm. September A NEW Forest pub has divid- ed opinion after calling time on young children and becoming an “adults only” establishment. The Compass Inn, in Winsor, announced the new rule had come in from Tuesday, saying only youngsters aged 12 and over would be allowed in – apart from Sunday lunch when small- er children would be admitted. The new policy is from land- lady Mop Draper, who for 25 years has run the watering hole which – in contrast to the atti- tude to children – claims to be “the most dog-friendly pub in the New Forest”. Ms Draper told the A&T she was “sad” to take the decision but that “parents of a few unru- ly children had spoilt it for the majority”. A sign outside the hostel- ry, which describes itself as an “old fashioned traditional pub”, states: “Dogs welcome, children should be leashed.” October A CONSERVATION group has ramped up the pressure on New Forest policy makers to do more to control recreation after a surge in activity. The Friends of the New For- est is calling on organisations responsible for managing the national park to provide alter-

been shut until the end of the month and entertainment ven- ues such as the Regent Centre in Christchurch have shut their doors. Panic-buying continued in shops, with queues forming ear- ly and shelves stripped bare of some items. April WILDLIFE is thriving amid the lockdown as animals return to areas where they had fled crowds of visitors, according to nature experts. Seals, rare birds and other creatures have been spotted along the coast and in the New Forest during the coronavi- rus outbreak as people stay at home. Dave Rumble of the Hamp- shire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said animals were return- ing to places from which they had been driven. He said: “We are seeing what happened during the foot-and- mouth outbreak of 20 years ago that led to a similar lockdown in terms of where people could go.” May A SPORTY six-year-old from Highcliffe really went the dis- tance when he ran just over 100 miles to raise thousands of pounds in aid of local NHS workers tackling the coronavi- rus pandemic. Luca Summers’ drive to sup- port the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals’ NHS Heroes appeal inspired him to undertake a sponsored challenge which saw him com- plete 27 runs covering a total of 101 miles. Local police officers and fire - fighters were on hand to lend moral support on Sunday morn- ing as Luca crossed the finish line for the final time. So far his exploits have raised more than £7,000 towards the appeal. Mum Laura Summers said: “We are so proud of everything Luca has achieved. The tenaci-

native recreational facilities and properly enforce laws and by- laws. The group says there have been issues around people pad- dle boarding in wildlife ponds, electric bikes racing through ar- eas of the Forest barred to pedal cyclists, and red deer being dis- turbed by large numbers of pho- tographers. November LOCKDOWN descended again on the New Forest and Christchurch amid warnings from local businesses that their survival depends on public sup- port and the restrictions easing in December. The new national rules, an- nounced by the Prime Minister on Saturday over fears of rising infection rates, came in as two more people died from Covid-19 in the New Forest – the first fa - talities reported in six weeks. There were four deaths in the BCP Council area. As well as pubs, restaurants and “non-essential” shops, the doors have closed on New For- est and BCP councils’ leisure centres, plus theatres and grass- roots sport. December YOUNGSTERS have spread some Christmas cheer with their own Santa Dash to raise funds for Oakhaven Hos- pice. Southlands School, a special- ist residential site near Lyming- ton, caters for children with au- tism, many of whom have found lockdown difficult. Staff wanted to give pupils a little bit of festive joy so organ- ised a week of Christmas ac- tivities – which culminated in the sponsored run around the school site. As reported in the A&T, due to the pandemic Oakhaven was unable to stage its tradition- al annual Santa Dash through Lymington this year, and in- stead appealed to fundraisers to hold their own.

ADEAD foxhas beendumped outside the New Forest home of TV naturalist Chris Packham in apparent retaliation against his campaign to end hunting. The outspoken presenter tweeted an image of the animal which he concluded had proba- bly been killed with a snare, and said he had alerted the police. Mr Packham said: “It appears that if you oppose the cruelty and illegality of fox hunting and those who club them to death you don’t just get social media abuse.” February BUSINESSES have come to- gether in Totton to create a net- work of refuges for anyone who feels threatened on the streets. The safe-place initiative was the idea of Sharon Eyre, who runs Gentlemen’s League bar- bers in Rumbridge Street. She said: “Anyone who feels vulnera- ble, scared or uneasy is welcome to come in and wait for some- one to collect [or] escort them home.” Although there have been no serious crimes committed, Sha- ron added that she had been in- formed of a couple of instances of schoolchildren being bullied. March THE New Forest and Christchurch is braced for a shutdown of schools, services and events as the coronavirus pandemic worsened with the national death toll rising to more than 1,000 this week. Confirmed coronavirus cases in Hampshire had reached 77 by Wednesday, and in the BCP Council area the total stood at seven. Some schools had already been operating partial closures before the government an- nounced on Wednesday they will all shut completely from to- day (Friday). Exams have also been cancelled. All New Forest District Coun- cil’s leisure centres have also

NPA chair Oliver Crosth- waite-Eyre called for the items to be pulled from sale after a spate of small fires in the New Forest, and a huge incident at Wareham Forest which has smouldered for more than a fortnight. Those signing up have in- cluded the Co-op stores in Lyn- dhurst and Milford, Shappen Stores in Burley, Tesco in Brock- enhurst and Castle Home Hard- ware in Christchurch, following the lead of Streets Ironmongers in Brockenhurst and local Wel- come Stores. July A LOST portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson’s mistress Lady Hamilton has been discovered at a Lymington antiques shop. The painting by Richard Westall was dated to 1802, three years before Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar. The oil-on-canvas painting was taken to antique dealer Charles Wallrock, of Wick An- tiques in Lymington, by an el- derly woman who had owned it for years.
