Milk plea...deer battle...lights out...bonfire threat 75 YEARS AGO

at home “kicking about” espe- cially with the holidays that schools had nowadays. Alderman E. Knight sug- gested that during the holi- days the children could go and collect the milk from the dairy- men who supplied the schools. * * * * * * LYMINGTONIANS and oth- er residents may soon have an opportunity of inspecting the HMS Obedient, the destroyer which the borough “adopted” as a sequel to its successful Warship Week in 1942. Obedient, which has late- ly been going from Rosyth to Germany fortnightly, is prob- ably going to be based in the Portland area and her captain has intimated she might be able to pay a visit to the So- lent. The mayor (Ald. Capt. Goodhart) has suggested the destroyer could anchor at the mouth of Lymington River and an appropriate programme could be arranged for the visit. 50 YEARS AGO QUITE a serious fall at Bec- ton Bunny, near the sewer out- fall, which had exposed the Barton sewer for a considera- ble distance, was reported to Lymington Council members on Wednesday by the Health Committee chairman, Alder- man W. R. K. Symons, who said that he had been given the news by the borough engi- neer only that day. The previously estimated £3,500 cost for the extension of the sewer, it had been sug- gested, should be undertaken in February, was likely to be “doubled or possibly trebled” to put the matter right. He would be discussing emergen-

sance to his neighbours it could cost him £5,000, as New Forest magistrates rejected his appeal against an enforce- ment order by council environ- mental officers. Mr John Burgess, of Farm Lane North, who was chal- lenging the order, heard New Forest senior environmental officer David Gander tell the court that every year they re- ceive a considerable number of complaints about bonfires. “It is almost impossible not to upset someone. Smoke from bonfires contain particu - lates which are carcinogenic,” he said. “Gardeners should either purchase special bags from the council, which can be col- lected, or burn really dry ma- terial quickly or take it to the tip at Efford.” * * * * * * THE possibility of New For- est District Council selling car parks so that it has more money to spend on building projects was being floated at Thursday’s Environmental Services Committee. NFDC has 50 car parks, containing 6,716 spaces, and councillors were advised that they have to weigh up the benefits of increased capital spending power against “the loss of revenue income from parking charges, both in the short term and over a longer period”. If car parks were sold to a private company, the possi- ble impact of higher levels of charges on the local economy had to be considered. And the council stood to make more money if the car parks were sold for “alternative uses”.

passengers a year. He again stressed that any increase in Hurn’s commer- cial traffic would be more than counterbalanced by reduction in military and BAC One-elev- en flights. Referring to complaints about noise, Mr Longhurst said that after many hours spent in the Barton and Mu- deford areas making noise measurements, it had become apparent that many of the air- craft referred to were in fact at some 10,000-15,000ft high in the airway passing over this area on their way to London. 25 YEARS AGO THERE’S going to be less sparkle in New Milton this Christmas because the town council and the hard-up busi- ness community cannot afford to meet increased costs this year of putting on the normally much heralded illuminations. The costs have rocketed due to new safety requirements and eight displays are having to be dropped in Station Road to bring the bill within budget. The cost of the decorations is usually around £3,500 but new health and safety inter- pretations being imposed by Hampshire County Council have meant that the coun- cil has had to find an extra £10,000 for conversion work and the cost of electricity, most of which is normally waived by those from whose premises it is run. The council has been stopped from taking electric- ity supplies from individual premises for displays attached to street lamp columns. * * * * * * IF a Barton man lights an- other bonfire which is a nui -

THE deepest sympathy will be felt with Mrs E. M. Dim- mick, newsagent, High Street, Lymington, on the death of her only son L.A.C. Ronald (“Jock”) Dimmick, RAFVR, while a prisoner-of-war in the Far East. The sad news was received by Mrs Dimmick from LAC W. Yates, the only survivor of six young RAF men who were hutted together in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. In a letter to Mrs Dimmick, LAC Yates states that “Jock” died from malaria whilst being taken from an island near New Guinea to Java, on November 4th last year, and was buried at sea in the South Celebes. LAC Dimmick, who was 27, joined the RAFVR, at the be- ginning of 1940 and was sta- tioned at Boscombe Down (Wilts) before leaving for the Far East at the end of 1941. He was among the men captured not long after going to Singa- pore. * * * * * * LYMINGTON Borough Food Control Committee agreed on Tuesday to make representations for a bigger milk ration for people of 70 and over. “They cannot ex- ist on two pints a week,” one member declared. It was further decided to recommend that some ar- rangement should be made whereby children would be able to get during holidays the milk allowance that is availa- ble to them at school. Alderman E. H. Baugh, chairman, said that surely if the milk was necessary for them while they were at school it was just as necessary, even if not more, so whilst they were
