Philip Whitcomb from top 100 UK law firm Moore Barlow has recently authored a new book which is set to become the definitive legal guide for farming partnerships in the UK. The book – entitled “A Practical Guide to the Law of Farming Partnerships” – explores the myriad legal issues faced by farming fam - ilies and covers a range of aspects of farming partner - ships, including the need for commerciality and succession planning. Filled with practical examples, it provides an over - view of the main issues that those entering into farming partnerships may come across, along with the guidelines and strategies to help and support
knowledge and practical expe - rience dealing with all aspects of estate planning, particu - larly for farmers and landed estate owners, as well as farm - ing partnerships. The book is available for pre-order now at www.lawbriefpublishing. com/farmingpartnerships Philip is based in the Lymington office of Moore Barlow, which has six offices across the South East. There he works alongside 20 of our other legal experts who provide specialist advice
all those involved in advising on such partnerships. “Many professionals will be familiar with partnerships and how they work but few will truly understand the nuances and complexities of a farm - ing partnership,” said Philip Whitcomb. “With high values of land and an increasingly elderly farming population, the risk levels for advising in this area of law continue to increase significantly. This book endeavours to help prac - titioners keep abreast of these issues, and to recognise all the key intricacies surrounding farming partnerships.” A widely respected lawyer in his field, in authoring this book Philip brought his extensive
on many private and business legal matters, including private client, residential property, rural services, family, and looking after vul - nerable people.

A time to reflect and a time to look forward
you address all of these issues. Contact Richard Wadsworth, Deborah Sandys, Susan Davies or Richard Brixey on 01590 676933 or email at law@scottbailey.co.uk . Planning for the future could also include your relationship. Sadly, some have found that lockdown merely served to highlight existing issues in their rela - tionship. The family team at Scott Bailey are all committed to approaching mat - ters in a non confrontational way. We have all heard of lawyers who give every impression that they would be happy to start a fight in an empty room. Sarah Unsworth and Ann Herd are both experi - enced accredited mediators. Whilst they will argue your case tenaciously when it is right to do so, they know that an agreed outcome is one which will “stick”, save money and enable both parties to move on with their lives. What about the children? Are all necessary arrangements in place for them? If you are in a new relationship then you may like to con - sider what arrangements you should put in place to cover your future together. A prenuptial or post nuptial agreement can help you to move forward confident in the knowledge that you have addressed all issues. The family team of Sarah Unsworth, Ann Herd and Olivia Dyer are all spe - cialists who can help you resolve all the issues which may arise whether you are ending a relationship or embarking on a new one. They can be contacted on 01590 676933 or law@scottbailey.co.uk .
Life can be tough at the moment. Fears for our health and for what the future may hold leaves many of us feeling anx - ious. This sense of helplessness can be exacerbated when, not through choice, you are left with too much time on your hands missing your usual activities and perhaps with only a limited ability to see family and friends. It may seem hard to focus but there is much to be said for using this time as an opportunity to do some planning for that covid-free future we all long for and put your affairs in order. There are some really simple questions you should ask yourself. Have you got a will? If so is it up-to-date? Have your assets changed? Do you need advice on the most tax effi - cient way to deal with your estate? Are there any charities you would like to sup - port? If you have perhaps moved on and are in a more recent relationship, have you properly and fairly provided for both families? If you have children, have you appointed a testamentary guardian so that you know that the children can be cared for as you would wish in the future? Another question you should perhaps ask yourself is whether you should put a lasting power-of-attorney in place. No-one wants to think of a time when they might become too incapacitated to manage their own affairs.Better to think of it as an insurance policy - something you hope never to have to use but is there ready just in case you do you need it.
