Lymington su er narrow Sholing cup final defeat Russell-Cotes Cup final Sholing FC 1 Lymington Town FC 0

LYMINGTON Town conceded their first goal in more than a month in a 1-0 loss to Sholing FC in the Russell-Cotes Cup final at The Universal Stadium on Tuesday. Town came into the match in tremendous form after winning all seven of their previous league fixtures. However, Sholing, who play a league above, were looking to retain the cup they won last year. Manager Dave Lewis started the match without the influential Craig McAllister and Stanley, with last season’s top scorer Sam House and Luke Churchill warming the bench – the decision perhaps with one eye on the south coast side’s top-of-the-table clash with Fareham Town. In the opening 10 minutes, Sholing earned a couple of early corners and a dangerous- looking free-kick which amounted to nothing. After the initial barrage, Lymington began to show their pedigree. Lymington’s impressive run of clean sheets came to an end in the 43rd minute when Dan Mason got on the end of

a corner before diverting the ball just inside the left post. Luke Churchill came on for the injured Steve Flynn, and midway through the second period House came off the bench. The personnel changes saw Lymington fashion chances, with Dom Falco and Owen Fee, who was awarded the player of the match, both going close. Lymington keeper Ross Casey made two impressive saves before a bit of luck saw the ball trickle narrowly passed the right post, with Casey well-beaten. With the announcement of

four minutes of injury time, Lymington threw caution to the wind and piled men forward, but Sholing held on to lift the cup. Hordle refereeGary Parsons, who officiated his first match since being diagnosed with cancer, was also singled out for praise for the way he allowed the game to flow. Nearly 250 spectators attended the match. Lymington: R. Casey, R. Fuller, R. Drake, T. Carkett, T. Stephenson, N. Hurst, O. Fee, R. Nicholls, D. Falco, S. Flynn, C. Churchill. Subs: S. House, L. goals in the final five minutes to beat Hamble Club 3-2 at the weekend. The trend continued when McGrath held his nerve to score the equaliser. In the 92nd minute, Bashley earned a free-kick just outside of the penalty area which keep- er Joe McCormack pawed away. Webber reacted fastest to fire home the loose ball and win it for his side. Blackfield made a decent start to the match, and River Smith’s early strike was more than de- served. It was all downhill from then with Andover hitting the back of the net with three unan- swered goals before a late own goal made the scoreline one that flattered the home side. Blackfield & Langley: J. Be- sant, C. Newton, J. Williamson, J. Barton, L, Gray, S. Saadi, C. Khider, C. Morrison, R. Smith, S. Mahkloufi, N. Meddam. Subs: H. Cooper, J. Nace, H. Avrow, A. BASHLEY FC scored two goals in the last three minutes to beat Newport 3-2 and progress to the quarter-finals of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup at the East Cowes stadium on Tuesday. Bashley were missing a few influential players for the trip to the Isle of Wight and New- port, despite playing with 10 men from the 17th minute, de- servedly took a 2-0 lead into the break. Lewis Ross got his side

Newport played the majority of the match with 10 men af- ter Jacob Reynolds’ studs-up challenge earned the player a straight red. Despite the disad- vantage, the home side scored two first-half headed goals from Jake Younie and Jordan Browne. Paul Morris sent his men out looking like a different side in the second-half, and Ross soon halved the deficit in the 61st minute.

whose header hit the woodwork. The Christchurch stopper got a hand to the ball, but he could only push it into the path of Warren. The striker, who was lucky to be on the pitch, buried the chance without hesitation. Christchurch came back well, and Max Wilcock had a superb chance to level. Unfortunately, he put the ball wide after mistiming his diving header. In the dying minutes Ron Frost was sin-binned. Christchurch pushed men forward, which allowed the visitors to counter and earn a 93rd-minute penalty which Lewis Harvey converted. Christchurch: L. Gunstone- Grey, E. Chameje, B. Hill, R. Frost, L. Ansell, M. Hubbard, B. Satterley, L. Delaney, W. Fletcher, M. Wilcock, A. Pope. Subs: N. Swann, J. Johnstone, J. Blake, J. Buck, J. Satterley, M. Frampton.

The home side went close several times with Ash Pope and Ron Frost having the best chances. The visitors were grateful to keeper Jones when the half-time whistle came with the scores still level. Poppies improved in the second-half, and they began to threaten the Christchurch goal. Christchurch almost conceded after a poor kick by the typically superb keeper Lewis Gunstone-Gray which led to Lewis Chambers clattering a shot off the crossbar. Gunstone- Gray went to clear the ball, but Poppies number nine Warren slide in and caught the keeper late. Referee Darren Cooley decided against a probably- warranted red card. The visitors found the opener when Jack Kinge-Phillips’ cross found the head of Liam House

CHRISTCHURCH FC created the better chances, but they never found a way past keeper Sam Jones as Bournemouth Poppies won 2-0 at Hurn Bridge on Tuesday. The first half was a closely contested battle, with Christchurch fashioning good chances. However, Jones repeatedly produced impressive saves to maintain the deadlock. Poppies opened the scoring through Martin Warren around the hour mark before Ron Frost was sin-binned late on. With the home side pushing forward, Poppies countered and won a late penalty to widen the winning margin. Christchurch started the match the brighter of the two sides. The contest turned into
