Moaning Minnie...gammon thieves...village lights 75 YEARS AGO

The War Memorial Hall is be- ing used as a parcels depot, and many of the temporary staff are operating from there * * * * * * A PROFIT of only nine guineas was made by the New Forest Agricultural Show this year, despite the record gate of 25,617 – 3,000 more than last year, when the profit was £1,000. These facts were giv- en at a meeting of the show society council at Burley last week, when the treasurer, Mr J. C. G. Barradell, in his report blamed the firm responsible for the car parking arrange- ments for losing an income amounting to at least £300. Despite the fact that car park charges had been increased by 1/- and there were many more cars, there was a de- crease in income from this source. * * * * * * FIRE gutted Bransgore British Legion Hall, in Ring- wood Road, Bransgore, early on Saturday morning, and police have said that arson was a possibility. This is the fourth fire to have broken out, without explanation, in the Bransgore area within only a few months. Detective Chief Inspector William Winspear, head of the New Forest CID, who took over the investigation, said of this, the most recent fire – which leaves several village organisations without head- quarters: “Arson cannot be ruled out.” The British Le- gion took over the premises, which belongs to the Mey- rick Estate, three years ago. The 66-year-old building was previously used as a working men’s club.

ing” the conditions and re- questing the county council to state what steps were be- ing taken to effect a remedy, although the mover accepted a rider by Coun. Taylor that “the council is aware of the manifold tasks confronting the building industry”. Coun. Lamb, in moving the resolution, said he thought he was taking a skeleton form the cupboard which had laid there much too long and giv- ing it a necessary airing. The Gore Road (New Milton) Jun- ior School buildings, consist- ing of Army huts erected in 1920 must be demolished and a school worthy of the chil- dren there built in their place. Ashley Junior School, he said was already overflow - ing into the Baptist Church schoolroom, and the coun- cil was planning to put up 70 houses in the neighbourhood. Like Milford School, Ashley Junior had earth buckets for sanitation, and he knew of children running home in pain rather than use such accom- modation. The schools could be connected to sewers near- by. of Christmas mail have been re- ported to the A&T by princi- pal post offices this week. At New Milton, total col- lections from Monday 14th December, until Tuesday evening this week, had num- bered 272,000 – some 17,000 up on last year. The intake of 33 temporary staff – main- ly students – has more than doubled the number of postal workers at the office, and five extra vans have been hired. 50 YEARS AGO RECORD postings

THE Advertiser & Times re- grets that owing to continued government restriction in the size of newspapers, nearly two columns of town council news has had to be held over until next week. It is regretted too that the usual educational advertise- ments and the advertise- ments of Messrs Willis & Son, Tinsley & Son, Mew Langton, and F. Holes, are held over this week in order to give lo- cal motor car agents publici- ty following the government’s decision to abolish permits for new cars. * * * * * * SIR – It must give great satisfaction to the people of Lymington and district, to know that the council are pro- testing against the use of the air raid siren for summoning the NFS for fire calls. I think it is true to say that during its use, useful as it was, the horrid wail of the siren did more to fray the nerves of peo- ple, than the sound of ‘planes in the vicinity, and, I am sure there are very few who want to hear the awful wails of “moaning Minnie” again. It is quite true that to revert to its use would certainly have a bad psychological effect on many of the public, and I for one, sincerely hope the coun- cil’s protest against its use will be endorsed and upheld. “Had Enough” * * * * * * A STRONG criticism of the conditions existing in the elementary schools of the borough was made by Coun. S. V. T. Lamb at Lymington Town Council, when members adopted a resolution “deplor-

25 YEARS AGO: A crowd gathers to enjoy the Lyndhurst lights

Firemen fought their way into a wing containing the bar, which had escaped the flames, and managed to salvage the stock of beer and spirits. 25 YEARS AGO THIEVES, perhaps already sick of turkey a fortnight be- fore Christmas, made off with all the ingredients of a festive feast from Dewhurst Butchers at Totton but left the Christ- mas lunch behind. About £900 worth of gammons, hams, cheeses and tins of corned beef were taken after they smashed in through the back of the shop at the weekend. But they evidently chickened out of stealing the turkeys which were left in a bin behind the Commercial Road store. * * * * * * THE spiralling num- ber of homeless people in Christchurch is expected to cost the borough coun- cil around £60,000 more next year with the prospect that

the problem will only get worse. Last April the council al- located £16,000 to cover the cost of its statutory duties towards the homeless, which are carried out on an agency basis by Twynham Housing Association. However, with 341 cases of homelessness so far this year, compared with 295 for the whole of 1994/95, an extra £62,000 has had to be found. * * * * * * ONCE again the Christmas illuminations at Lyndhurst must rank as the best between Southampton and Bourne- mouth – and they had better look out, too! Almost 3,000 light bulbs, six large Christ- mas trees, 94 small trees, three set-pieces, and a floodlit parish church, a load of 32.6- kw of power over the Christ- mas period costing nearly £800 — all serve to make Lyn- dhurst a literal highlight for the festive season.
