Bullard brace sees Brock past Ringwood in league cup clash Sydenhams Wessex League Cup 2nd Round Brockenhurst FC 3 Ringwood Town FC 1

BROCKENHURST FC se- cured a spot in the next round of the league cup with a hard- fought 3-1 win over local rivals Ringwood at the Meadens Skoda Arena. Brockenhurst took a 1-0 lead into the break after young striker Freddie Bullard scored from close range. Sammy Brown restored parity with a direct free-kick before Dylan Manufor and Bullard put the game to bed in the second- half. Although Ringwood made a bright start, Brockenhurst looked the more likely of the two to score first. Brockenhurst captain Will Tickle went close with a free-kick from just outside the box, his shot well-saved by Ringwood’s Liam Harris who tipped the ball onto the upright. When the breakthrough came, it arrived in the simplest of ways. Eighteen-year-old Bullard worked some space before quickly firing off a shot which worked its way through a gaggle of defenders from 10 yards out. The second half was more competitive, with Ringwood forcing some impressive saves from Badgers keeper Jon Webb. When the equaliser came, it was fully deserved as Ringwood’s Brown buried a free-kick from 19 yards with such authority that it drew applause from the beaten keeper. With the game hanging in the balance, defender Manufor Sydenhams Wessex Premier Christchurch FC 0 Lymington Town FC 1 LYMINGTON Town FC continued their perfect start to the league campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Christchurch FC at Hurn Bridge. Lymington took a first- half lead when captain Tim Stephenson, who used to be an AFC Bournemouth Academy player, blasted a header in from close range. Christchurch’s task was made all the more difficult after the dismissal of Ron Frost for a poor challenge on Tyrone Carkeet. Both sides started the match looking to be the aggressors, with chances exchanged at either end. The deadlock was broken when Lymington Town’s Luke Churchill lifted a corner high into the air for centre back Stephenson, who arrived late after running in from deep, to firmly header the ball past Lewis Gunstone-Gray to give his side a 28th-minute lead. With his side chasing the game, Christchurch’s influential Frost was penalised by David Morey after going through the back of Carkeet. Despite the midfielder already on a yellow card, the referee displayed a straight red to reduce the home side to 10 men with half-time moments away. After the break, Craig McAllister headed the ball

really should have gone into the break with more goals. However, the second half was much more even. Both sides created, but Jon Webb was in fine form and we were more clinical. “I was especially pleased with the performances of some of our 17 to 19-year-olds, particularly Freddie Bullard with his brace.” In the next round, Brockenhurst FC will take on US Portsmouth who play in Sydenhams Wessex Division One. Their next league match is at home against Lymington Town FC on 7th October.

“I’m happy to see the side progress to the next round. We knew Ringwood would be on a high after their 5-0 win over Hythe & Dibden at the

weekend; we had no intention of underestimating them. “I feel like we dominated the first half and limited them to counter attacks. We

Morgan penalty enough as Bashley beat league leaders

Sydenhams Premier Division Bashley FC 1 Horndean FC 0 BASHLEY FC withstood a first-half barrage to clinch a 1-0 home victory over early league leaders Horndean with a second-half penalty. Horndean laid siege to the Bashley goal right from the off, with goalkeeper Sam Thompson called on more than once to keep the visitors at bay. However, once the teams re- emerged for the second-half, Bashley seized the impetus before Harry Morgan converted a penalty after Lewis Ross was cut down in the box. Horndean started with an intensity that Bashley could not match, and their bustling number nine, former Bashley player Connor Duffin, was in tremendous form. The alertness of Bashley’s new keeper Thompson kept the scores level when he tipped a wickedly diverted shot over the bar. He then won applause from spectators when dealing with a fierce drive by Duffin which left everyone frozen apart from the nimble keeper. After the break, both sides made changes, with Horndean replacing Tommy Tierney who had damaged his ankle, while Bashley brought on Harry Bruce and Cameron Beard. The

down to second-half substitute Owen Fee who blazed a glorious chance to double the lead over the bar from 12 yards out. Although the home side failed to create much in the second- half, their loud, and probably accurate, calls for a handball on the edge of the area fell on deaf ears. of scoring by stepping up and calmly placing the ball wide of the keeper. With 26 minutes left to play, Bashley went after a second goal. Beard was in an imperious form, and he came close several times. He hooked the ball towards goal from a corner, a flicking header drew a decent save from the keeper, and drew gasps from the crowd when his

changes paid off immediately with Bunce running at the defence and Beard unsettling the visitors’ backline with his movement. The breakthrough came for Bashley when Ross was brought down in the area as he turned to shoot after Bunce had played him in.
