Taylor spins Southern Vipers to final victory
Football
Ten-man Totton top the table
With half-time approaching, Alresford took the lead. Ashley Elson’s pace had been causing trouble for centre backs Billy Walker and Harvey Wright, and a moment of hesitation allowed the striker a clear run on goal. He kept his cool before slotting the ball past keeper Lewis Gunstone-Gray. The second-half kicked off with Christchurch missing chances but playing with a freedom that belied the scoreline. The breakthrough finally came just after the hour NEWMilton’s Charlotte Taylor produced the performance of her life, taking six wickets to lead the Southern Vipers to the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy title at Edgbaston The former Arnewood School pupil’s performance, which is the best return from any bowler in the competition, ensured the Vipers defended 232 to beat Northern Diamonds by 38 runs to become the competition’s inaugural champions. The Diamonds’ run chase got off to a decent start with them well-placed on 74 for 1 in the 15th over. However, off- spinner Taylor’s brilliant spell cut them down to 96 for 6 by the 23rd. Taylor had opener Hollie Armitage caught for 26 runs before she took former England Academy player Alex MacDonald’s wicket, trapping Jenny Gunn LBW, and having Bess Heath caught. Taylor also trapped Beth Langston LBW before she had Netherlands international Sterre Kalis caught for 55 to finish with a superb six wickets for 34 runs. The impressive haul means she ends with a competition-high 15 wickets from five appearances. The Southern Vipers made it seven wins out of seven in a perfect season with the Diamonds bowled out for 193 with seven overs spare. The 26-year-old’s remarkable performance may have taken many by surprise considering she did not make the initial squad but was drafted in after the competition began. Taylor, who also claimed the player of the match award, said: “That’s the best I’ve ever bowled. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Obviously a few weeks ago I got drafted into the competition. I never expected to play, but I’m proving to myself week in and week out that I can play at this level. “They got off to a good start, but we took wickets at key times, and I’m so happy I was able to contribute. Lots of people wouldn’t have seen me play too much cricket, and I think that works to my advantage, especially with my bowling. The deficit was doubled when the ball fortuitously broke to the feet of Denham, who buried the ball into the far corner with an ice-cool first-time shot. The game was put to bed when Mike Davis curled shot into the far corner from 25-yards after he was allowed too much time. With four minutes left, Rian Fear’s cross foundDanny Burns, whose shot was deflected high into the air for Clarke, who leapt well, forcing an Andover defender to steer the ball over his own line. Totton almost had a second moments later but O’Brien rushed and handled outside of his area before he was shown red. Totton & Eling: Eyres, Fear, Fear, Gain, Lomax, Lycett, Matthews, Hartmann, A. towards Masterton, who let it run on to Brett Williams. The new signing drifted in behind and, with time and space, he smashed the ball home from 10 yards out. Bideford won back-to- back corners, and the ensuing jostling forced the referee to have a word with a couple of players. When the ball was delivered for the second, Bideford’s George Nancekivell went down and referee James Robinson awarded a penalty. Ryan Turner stepped up to send Stags keeper Lewis Noice the wrong way. In the aftermath, Medway said something the ref disapproved of and he received his marching orders. Although the game was more competitive after the sending-off, Bideford forced Noice into action only once as the game ended 1-1. It puts Totton atop the Southern League Div One South. Bideford AFC 1 AFC TOTTON will feel they deserved all three points after being the better team throughout their 1-1 draw with North Devon club Bideford. Manager Glenn Howes named the same 11 which beat Barnstaple Town 3-0, and the decision looked to pay off when Brett Williams scored just before half-time. However, Bideford converted a penalty before Harry Medway received a second yellow for verbally abusing the referee. The Stags almost took the lead with the game 15 minutes old. Jack Masterton intercepted a poor clearance from keeper Kingston before lifting the ball towards the near post where Craig Feeney could direct his header only into the side netting. The breakthrough arrived with five minutes left until half-time. Sam Griffin’s ball into the area was directed

mark when, after yet another assault on the Alresford defence, the ball fell to Finch who buried his close-range shot. With Christchurch pushing for a second at a corner, captain Billy Walker was penalised for dissent and sin-binned for 10 minutes. The resulting confusion allowed Alresford’s Louis Russell some space to work a shot and squeeze the ball past Gunstone-Gray. Russell was lucky to still be on the field after the referee “For us to win seven games out of seven with such a young side, it’s really impressive and bodes well for the future.” After the match, Northern Diamonds skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill, said: “Credit to the girls for sticking in at the end. We did well to drag them back, but we did not bat well enough, and Charlotte Taylor bowled really well.” Taylor first played at New Milton Cricket Club in the U9 boys team, later joining Hursley Park CC as a 14-year- old. Charlotte’s dad, Steve, who also played for New Milton Cricket Club, said: “Because of Covid-19 we couldn’t attend the match, but the immediate family were all at home watching the final on TV. It was great to watch as the wickets came – we weren’t surprised at all because we know how good she is. “She does the basics really well; she consistently puts the ball on the spot and makes the batsmen work every ball. Christchurch should have taken a ninth-minute lead from the penalty spot after Alresford’s Kayode Conteh barged over Max Wilcock. Ash Pope took the shot, but his effort flew well over the crossbar. The home side began to dominate the match with Ron Frost’s long throw-ins causing mayhem in the Alresford defence. Wilcock and Finch both went close to scoring off two particular missile-like throws.

RINGWOOD Town continued their early season goal-scoring form by hitting five goals past pre-match favourites Hythe & Dibden at the MACRA Community Stadium. Based on last season’s form, many picked Hythe & Dibden the most likely side to win. However, two goals from Ryan Hamm and Ben Harris and one from Joe Petty showed a lot can

The visitors opened the scoring in the first half through Luke Churchill before substitute Owen Fee came on to finish the match off with a late second goal. Lymington, who could have scored many more in the match, dominated the majority of the exchanges and they thoroughly deserved the win. Lymington Town: Casey, L.
BLACKFIELD & Langley FC maintained their unbeaten start to the Wessex Premier league with a 2-1 win over Shaftesbury FC to go second with a game in hand. The home side’s early-season form contrasts sharply with Shaftesbury’s, who are still to register a league win. The visitors’ task got off to the worst start when the referee, Alex Rush-Fear, awarded a penalty with two minutes gone.

Millers still hunting first win Sydenhams Division One Andover New Street FC 3 Totton & Eling FC 1
TOTTON & Eling FC played well but ultimately extended their winless run after losing 3-1 to Andover New Street. The visitors’ best moment of the half came when Danny Clarke showed good footwork to get away from his man before finding Ash Shergold. The striker beat two defenders before Sean O’Brien saved well at his near post. The Millers created three other decent chances, but the final touch proved elusive.
