minimum width for a one- way street, i.e. 30ft. A resolution was passed to write to Lymington Bor- ough Council and Hampshire County Council expressing great concern at their fail- ure to make provision for the widening of New Street, and recommending that the council negotiate with Boots to purchase the property concerned. If the owners refused to ne- gotiate, then an application should be made to the min- istry for ratification of a com - pulsory purchase order. * * * * * * THE death of a woman passenger, following a car ac- cident at Swan Green, Lynd- hurst, may have been caused by helpers who dragged her from the car dropping her on her head, an inquest heard. * * * * * * DICK Jobbins, of Highcliffe Sailing Club, became the first Contender class world cham- pion at the championships at Hayling Island, with a day to spare. By Thursday in last week his overall lead was so great that he need not have sailed in the final race, held on the Friday. Forty-five yachts com - peted in the six-race event. Mr Jobbins’ record over the five races was: second in the first race; third in the second race; and first in the remain - ing three races. Unfortunately, his luck did not hold out until the Friday,

This Boldre SEAC boxer champion will be a member of the RAF team which is to meet the American Marines at Colombo in October. Prior to the war Gregory joined the Lawrence Boxing Club at Lymington as a nov- ice and progressed to cham- pionship form in it by win- ning the Ship Cup. * * * * * * LADYTwysden, step-moth- er of Sir Anthony Twysden, Bt., wishes to be addressed in future as Eleanora Lady Twysden. 50 YEARS AGO “NO widening, no silver” was the view expressed by several members at a lively meeting of Lymington and District Chamber of Trade on Monday evening, when it was somewhat unfortunate that discussion of an appeal by the mayor, that the chamber might like to contribute a gift of silver to the borough, al- most immediately followed a heated debate on the contro- versial decision by Lyming- ton planning committee to approve the reconstruction of Timothy White’s premises on the corner of New Street and High Street, Lymington. The approval means that the widening of New Street will not now be possible – al- though in January the high- ways committee requested that in any approval for the development of the site, pro- vision should be made for the widening of the road to the

agitator for Ashurst and Col- bury Parish Council formed a mere 10 years ago. Constant badgering to South West Trains officials was rewarded when, on Mon- day afternoon, Eric and Stel- la Hopkins, the South West Trains area retail manager, formally unveiled new signs for the station, now designat- ed Ashurst (New Forest). * * * * * * THE first public event to be staged at Highcliffe Cas- tle for more than 30 years has begun. A Celebration in Flowers features a display of 20 ar- rangements depicting the chequered history of the Grade I Listed castle which is currently undergoing res- toration. * * * * * * TEN vulnerable areas of the New Forest have been desig - nated out of bounds to fungi pickers by the Forestry Com- mission as the mushroom season reaches its height. The Forest is one of Eu- rope’s most important sites for fungi and is home to many rare species. The commis- sion says that while people can collect fungi for domes- tic consumption, commercial picking is not permitted any- where. “Enthusiasts can continue to enjoy the delights of edible fungi while helping to protect vulnerable areas of the New Forest,” says Arthur Barlow, Deputy Surveyor.

AT the September meeting of Lymington Borough Coun- cil, the town clerk (Mr F. J. Beeching) read a letter from the Air Ministry assuring it that the Ministry is taking stringent measures to ensure that the disturbance from necessary night flying train - ing is reduced to a minimum and that, as far as possible, it shall not be done over towns and built up areas. “All cases of deliberate low flying, or flying involving un - necessary noise, which are reported to the Air Ministry,” the letter added, “are care- fully investigated in order to identify the aircraft responsi- ble. The attention of all RAF stations has recently been drawn to the orders in force against such flying.” * * * * * * LAC Percy Gregory, RAF, whose home is at Pilley Bai- ley, Boldre, has won the championship cup of his weight in the inter-Services Boxing Tournament open to members of the SEAC serv- ing in Bombay and the West- ern States of India. Gregory, who is a light- weight, defeated Cpl Lewis, RA, in the semi-final and Pet - ty Officer Jones, RN, in the final. The latter was fought at a good pace with some hard hitting exchanged by both men, but towards the end the Naval man began to wear down and Gregory kept up the pressure with his left, winning a fine fight on points.

Mr Jobbins also becomes British national champion. 25 YEARS AGO LYNDHURST Road rail - way station is no more – but before there’s an outcry of ac- cusations concerning any re- incarnation of Dr Beeching’s infamous axe, let it be added hastily that there has simply been a name change. For years Ashurst folk have considered it their station, with scant connection to Lyndhurst, three miles away.
