Pensioner found guilty over fatal crash at ATM

10-night closure for section of A338

MOTORISTS face disruption for up to 10 week-nights while overnight carriageway resurfac- ing work is carried out on the main route between Ringwood and Fordingbridge. From 16th November the A338 Salisbury Road will be closed between its junction with the A31 to approximately 150 metres south of Snails Lane from 8pm to 6am the following morning. A letter sent to nearby res- idents by Hampshire County Council explained the work

is part of its highway depart- ment’s Operation Resilience programme. “The road will be open during the day and over the weekend,” the letter stressed. It continued: “Due to the cur- rent Covid-19 situation, works will be carried out ensuring safe working practices, and social distancing between site opera- tives and members of the public are maintained at all times. “The appropriate traffic man - agement will be in place to pre- vent any interaction.”

A PENSIONER was found guilty of dangerous driving after her car ploughed into and killed an 86-year-old woman at a supermarket cash machine. Pauline Cove (78) was convicted on two charges of causing the death of Doris Lush (86) and serious injuries to her 22-year-old granddaughter, Rebecca. The verdicts followed what Southampton Crown Court heard was a “shocking” incident at the Totton Morrisons superstore on 12th July 2018. Woman (86) died after car ploughed into cash machine at store By JON WALLER

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the incident in which the red Peugeot 206 Cove was driving struck the two victims while they were standing near an ATM. Cove, who had finished her shopping, reversed out of a disabled parking bay and was driving towards the store at 11.55am when she collided with both women. After the crash, shoppers rushed to help the victims before paramedics arrived. Both were rushed to hospital but Doris could not be saved. Rebecca suffered serious leg injuries which required a six- week hospital stay. During that time, she underwent numerous procedures including skin grafts, the court heard. In her defence, Cove admitted she caused the crash

but suggested she fainted in the moments before and was incapable of avoiding it. However, the prosecution, led by Rose Burns, contested that claim, suspecting her foot slipped or she accidentally hit the accelerator pedal. Moments after the crash, the jury heard, Cove was conscious and told someone who went to her aid: “Those poor women.” She was also pictured on CCTV with both hands on the steering wheel moments before the impact and sitting in an upright position, while witnesses said her car was “lurching forward” amid “heavy revving”. Cove, of Hounsdown Avenue, Totton, was granted unconditional bail to appear at Salisbury Crown Court for sentence on 30th November.

The event by Wessex Cancer Trust will be held in the gar- den of The Grove in St John’s Street, Hythe, from 10am to- morrow (Saturday). June Richens founded the centre 18 months after losing her husband to a brain tumour. She said: “My husband David was fit and strong, so it came as a total shock when he was diag- nosed with a brain tumour and we were told it was terminal. “When I was told by my GP there was no local support

LYMINGTON and Brocken- hurst Lions have made a gen- erous donation to a Pennington teacher’s fundraising efforts. Charlotte Russell, a teacher at Pennington Junior School, is trying to raise £1,500 to pur- chase a set of 30 laptops. The plan is to collect enough cash so that during ICT classes every child will be able to have a laptop to work on, supporting their learning and helping them keep socially distanced during

the pandemic. The school’s efforts were boosted when Ian Duncan, from Lymington and Brockenhurst Lions, visited with a donation of £500 towards their goal. Ian said: “We recognise the importance of young pupils de- veloping their technology skills within the school environment. “Lymington and Brocken- hurst Lions are delighted to be helping the school achieve part of their target.”

Head teacher Kirstie Rich- ards and Mrs Russell thanked the Lions Club members for their donation. They are looking to raise an- other £1,000 to hit their target. If the school passes its goal, fundraising will continue with the aim of buying additional laptops in case pupils need help studying from home. Obituary David Birtchnell Founded Highcliffe furniture shop Birtchnells

THE founder of a family-run business in Highcliffe who was known for his dedication to customers has died aged 74. David Birtchnell set up Birtchnells Furniture Shop in Highcliffe in 1980 with his wife, Valerie. In 2014, after Valerie passed away, the family relaunched under the management of the couple’s daughter Chrissy and her husband. Only-child David was born in Chingford in Essex but moved to Poole as a youngster, where his family set up a furniture business called Windsors. Aged around 14 he left school to work for the family business and remained in the trade for the rest of his life. He met future wife Valerie, who worked in her family’s bakery shop, on a blind date. Together they founded Birtchnells and started trading in the high street in Highcliffe before moving to their current larger premises in Lymington Road. They had three children: Maria, Emma andChrissy. Sadly, Emma died in 1986 at the age of three from leukaemia. David also had three grandchildren: Caitlin, Elsie and Zachary. In his spare time David enjoyed boating, golf, tennis and watching AFC Bournemouth. Daughter Chrissy told the A&T: “He would do anything for anyone, whether a customer or not. I hear most days the expression about him, that he was one of life’s true gentlemen. “He was the kindest and bravest man I have ever met, who always had time for every person he met. “Chatting for hours to individual customers, even going to their houses to help with decisions. He will be so greatly missed.” David’s funeral will be held at Bournemouth Crematorium on 6th November. Donations in his memory can be made in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally at www.memorygiving.com/david robertbirtchnell
