■ By Glynn Williams MBE, Motoring Correspondent THE new 4x4 Grenadier being developed by New Forest billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos company is to play a leading role in promoting hydrogen propulsion. The agreement also includes the evaluation of Hyundai’s proprie- tary fuel cell system for the recently announced Ineos Grenadier as an important step in Ineos’ efforts to diversify its powertrain options at an early stage.

hydrogen-powered vehicles in the market. Hyundai is one of the lead- ing companies in the field of fuel cell technology, having started the world’s first mass production of fuel cell electric vehicles in 2013. Hyundai’s senior vice president and fuel cell centre chief Saehoon Kim said: “Ineos’ move into the development of a fuel cell elec- tric vehicle and hydrogen ecosys- tem marks yet another milestone towards sustainable and clean transportation. “Hyundai believes this will pro- vide an important low-carbon option across a wide range of sectors. We also hope our dec- ades-long expertise in hydrogen fuel cell work in synergy with Ineos’ expertise in field of chemistry to realise the mass production of green hydrogen and fuel cells for the Grenadier.” Ineos technical director Peter Williams said: “The agreement between Ineos and Hyundai pre- sents both companies with new opportunities to extend a lead- ing role in the clean hydrogen economy. “Evaluating new production processes, technology and appli- cations, combined with our existing capabilities, puts us in a unique position to meet emerging

Grenadier’s first customer deliv- eries are not expected before 2022, but already approaching 20,000 prospective buyers have expressed an interest in the indi- vidualistic 4x4. Built on a rugged steel ladder chassis, the initial announcement was that it will be powered by a choice of BMW turbocharged 3-litre six-cylinder petrol or diesel engines driving all four wheels through an eight-speed ZF auto- matic transmission. But with the cut-off for the sale of new cars and vans fuelled by petrol or diesel advanced to 2030 that would leave less than eight years for payback without a zero CO2 emission powertrain – hence the hydrogen attraction. Hyundai’s proprietary modular fuel cell system, which evalua- tion vehicles will use, has already proven reliable and effective in the Hyundai Nexo SUV. The world’s first dedicated hydrogen-powered SUV has the longest driving range among

The news comes hot on the heels of the government’s 2030 advance in the cut-off date for sale of new fossil fuelled cars and vans. Hyundai Motor Company and Ineos this week announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to explore new opportunities to accelerate the global hydrogen economy. Onboard hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity for propulsion rather than relying on batteries, with refuelling as speedy as for petrol or diesel and pure water the only emission produced. Ineos, which is chaired by Sir Jim, and Hyundai will jointly investigate opportunities for the production and supply of hydrogen as well as the worldwide deployment of hydrogen applications and tech- nologies, both companies initially seeking to facilitate public and pri- vate sector projects focused on the development of a hydrogen value chain in Europe.

demand for affordable, low-car- bon energy sources and the needs of demanding 4x4 owners in the future.” Ineos recently launched a new business todevelop andbuild clean hydrogen capacity across Europe in support of the drive towards a zero-carbon future. The company currently produces 300,000 tons of hydrogen a year mainly as a by-product from its chemical man- ufacturing operations. Through its subsidiary INOVYN, Ineos is Europe’s largest existing operator of electrolysis, the critical technology that uses renewable energy to produce hydrogen for power generation, transportation and industrial use. With sales of $61bn in 2019, Ineos is a global manufacturer of petrochemicals, specialty chem- icals and oil products employing

23,000 people. It has 34 busi- nesses, with a production network spanning 183 manufacturing facil- ities in 26 countries, from paints to plastics, textiles to technology, medicines to mobile phones. Its experience in storage and handling of hydrogen combined with its established know-how in electrolysis technology, puts Ineos in a unique position to drive pro- gress towards a carbon-free future based on hydrogen. The biggest challenge is to expand the fuelling infrastructure, with only around 20 hydrogen fill- ing stations in the UK at present. In 2018, Hyundai Motor Group announced its mid- to long-term roadmap Fuel Cell Vision 2030 to increase annual production of hydrogen fuel cell systems to 700,000 units by 2030. ■
