Poppy’s Red Roses complete back-to-back Grand Slams
BURGATE’S Poppy Cleall started every match and was a dominant force in England Women’s 2020 Six Nations Grand Slam victory. Free-scoring forward Cleall went over for her fourth try in five championship matches to help the Red Roses secure back-to-back Grand Slams with a 54-0 victory over Italy in Parma. The Red Roses were already crowned champions going into the match after Scotland held France to a 13-13 draw. The result means England’s men and women teams have both secured the 2020 titles, the first time they have completed that double since 2017. The former Ellingham & Ringwood player started all five matches to continue the fine form that has seen her lift the Women’s Premiership three times with Saracens as well as amass 40 caps for her country. This is 28-year-old’s third Grand Slam title after previously lifting the Six Nations in 2017 and 2019. In 2017, she also went to the Women’s World Cup where the Red Roses finished as runners-

up after a spirited loss to New Zealand, who lifted their fifth title. Cleall, who started at flanker after starting at lock in some of the previous games, scored her side’s second try of the match. England won a scrum in the middle of the pitch five metres out. The powerful pack drove their Italian counterparts backwards, which allowed number eight Sarah Beckett to pick up from the back of the scrum before she was tackled just short of the line. The English forwards
secured the ball before Cleall picked up and powerfully drove over the line. England were in imperious form throughout the Six Nations scoring 219 points while conceding just 20. Their campaign started in France where England began with a 19-13 win in what was their closest scoreline of the tournament. Bonus-point wins followed against Scotland (53-0), Ireland (27-0) and Wales (66- 7), before finishing the Six Nations with another bonus- point victory in Italy.

with their household, one other person or alone. Sydenhams Wessex League’s vice-chair and Covid liaison officer, Bob Purkiss MBE, told the A&T: “We have provided detailed advice and flow charts to our clubs so that they can be reassured as to what they need to do. “We have been very lucky down here in the south, compared to other step 5 and 6 leagues in the north, who have been in a higher tier for a while and therefore unable to play. “We are confident that when restrictions lift, the instructions that we have given to clubs will enable us to finish the season.” In March, the 2019-20 football season was declared null and void from steps two to six due to the first lockdown period. Since non-league football resumed, with social distancing and other Covid-secure
measures in place, clubs have seen a vastly increased demand for tickets with fans banned from higher-level games. An FA Spokesperson said: “Our aim is to ensure that the 2020-21 season is completed and will liaise with the relevant leagues to provide support and establish appropriate options to do so if required. Golf courses and driving ranges have also been told to close, but England Golf chief executive Jeremy Tomlinson released a statement saying the organisation would “respectfully challenge the government’s rationale” over the decision. He continued: “It is our sincere belief that it is now counter-productive to shut down a healthy pursuit which naturally lends itself to social distancing and is played in a Covid-secure manner in the open air.”
Tomlinson has also signed a petition to make courses exempt from the list of venues required to close. The petition has already surpassed 100,000 signatures, allowing it to be considered for a debate in parliament. England Golf is the governing body for all New Forest and Christchurch golf clubs. England Hockey, which oversees New Forest Hockey Club, says it is disappointed the new measures will mean no club or community hockey for at least a month. The Sports and Recreation Alliance, which represents UK national sports organisations including the FA and Rugby Football Union along with community sport, has warned the new measures may “prove to be the final nail in the coffin for a number of clubs”. at his own teammate. Then five minutes later, visiting manager Shaun Wilkinson was given his marching orders from the dugout for something he said to the linesman. When the chaos died down, Will Fletcher replaced Kyle Graham who was taken to hospital with concussion. The change brought instant reward when Fletcher scored with his first touch within a minute. The fun continued on 72 min- utes when Christchurch’s Brad Cherrett was sent off for diving in with studs showing. However, both players could have depart- ed as the Baffins man looked to have gone in two-footed. As the match wound to a close, the visitors were reduced to nine men when Josh Warren was sin-binned before Fletcher wrapped up the win with his second goal right on 90 minutes.
has been dealt a devastating blow after the government announced its second national lockdown, which started on yesterday (Thursday). As part of the four-week restrictions, leisure centres and gyms will be forced to close, as will other sporting facilities such as swimming pools and golf courses. The government confirmed that elite sport will be allowed to continue. This means non-league football, steps three in the English football pyramid and lower, will have to postpone matches and training. Under the new restrictions, people are being told to stay at home unless they have a specific reason to leave, such as education and work that cannot be done from home. Earlier in the week, the home side took part in a team- building visit to a boxing gym. This prepared them well for a highly-competitive, hard- fought goalless first-half. The match exploded into life after the break with three goals, one from Max Wilcock and a brace from Will Fletcher, and three red cards and a sin bin. The second half looked destined to stay at 0-0 until Wilcock headed in the opener on 57 minutes.

Lymington expected a tough match, and they were proved right in the first-half with right-winger Ed Hodge repeatedly outpacing his marker. However, the home defence, superbly marshalled by captain Tim Stephenson and vocal keeper Ross Casey, continued their magnificent form, repelling multiple attacks. When Lymington did get forward, the well-organised Hamworthy defence repeatedly trapped them offside. House had an excellent ulative long-range efforts: first James Shorey went close, be- fore the goalkeeping skills of Sam Thompson thwarted a swerving free-kick. The second-half began with Bashley’s Jack Smith forced off with an injury, replaced by Ollie Bradley. As the home side looked to reorganise, Brockenhurst’s Eder Batista almost capitalised with a fierce shot which fizzed past the upright. With half an hour left, the introduction of Beard swung the pendulum back in favour of the hosts. The breakthrough came from a jaw-dropping 30-yard headed
LYMINGTON continued their perfect league form with a resilient 1-0 victory over table- toppers Hamworthy United on Tuesday. The South Coast side, who welcomed Sam House and Owen Fee back into the side, have won all eight league fixtures while conceding only once. They have three games in hand over Hamworthy who are four points ahead. Sydenhams Wessex Premier Bashley FC 2 Brockenhurst FC 0 BASHLEY won the latest New Forest derby beating Brockenhurst 2-0 after a brace from Cameron Beard in front of 276 fans at the Glen Max Stadium on Tuesday. After a frenetic start, the match settled down with Bashley setting up camp in the Badgers half. This heralded a Bashley onslaught, but Beard somehow managed to lift his shot over the bar from two yards out. However, nothing could stop him with four minutes left when he finished well after a mazy run-and-cross by Harry Morgan. The referee drew criticism from both sides due to the num- ber of cards, mostly for honest, robust tackles.
