Shabby women...castle curses...£18m A31 tunnel 75 YEARS AGO
the women of England,” Mrs Knight continued, “they would say we do not mind still being shabby and we will go without that small portion of butter that is ours rather than taste the bitterness of obligations to other nations. “We will forget any question of party government and re- member only England – the land we love and will go on lending to restore her to her former glory.” 50 YEARS AGO IF THE opportunity to se- cure Highcliffe Castle and its park for the public is missed, then “future generations will have much to curse us for”, say the authors of a report on the castle. Summarising the conclu- sions of the joint report, the authors make a recommen- dation that the local planning authority should refuse appli- cations to demolish the major part of the castle or to erect bungalows in the grounds. “We consider the castle and its park should now be brought into public ownership as a place of public enjoyment,” says the report. “We believe that Highcliffe Castle presents an exceptional opportunity, which by its very nature can never recur, of securing for the public one of the finest por - tions of the Hampshire coast, and one of the last remaining undeveloped portions of the coastline in an area which is being rapidly urbanised.” * * * * * * KEYHAVEN River’s future formed the subject of discus- sion by Lymington Borough Council at their meeting on
Wednesday, and after an hour- long debate they decided that they should apply for a spe- cial act of parliament to give them control, and rejected an amendment after a recorded vote, that they should hand the river over to the Lyming- ton Harbour Commissioners. * * * * * * WITH a complete change from her usual books on hors- es, Marion Coakes (now Mrs David Mould), in conjunction with Gilliam Hirst, has writ- ten a fictional story of a pony named Sea Blond. The story, entitled Sue- Elaine Draws a Horse, is set against the real background of Marion’s family home at Becton Farm, New Milton, and those who have already read her previous books will find that this one gives them an even closer picture of her life as one of Britain’s leading show jumpers. 25 YEARS AGO A 300-METRE cut-and-cov- er tunnel along a stretch of the A31 between Stoney Cross and Picket Post would cost £18m to build, the New Forest Committee was told on Tues- day. The idea of reuniting the two halves of the Forest which were separated when the trunk road was built came from verderer David Stagg, who suggested it as a possible contender for funding by the Millennium Commission. The New Forest Committee wondered whether such an ambitious project was techni- cally possible and asked coun- ty officers to carry out prelimi - nary studies.
Docks into Dibden Bay gained momentum this week with the Royal Society for the Protec- tion of Birds denouncing the plans. The RSPB has described the possibility of building a new port between Dibden and Marchwood as particularly disturbing. “We are concerned that they are going to damage one of the UK’s top estuaries for wild birds,” explained an RSPB spokesman, “and the addi- tional port related traffic will threaten the unique habitat of the Forest.” * * * * * * A CHORUS of protests from local chambers of trade has failed to persuade New Forest councillors to drop proposals to introduce charges in the district’s shopping car parks. The Environmental Services Committee agreed to go out to public consultation on the issue after hearing that the income is badly needed, with accountants forecasting the committee’s revenue expendi- ture will put it nearly £600,000 in the red within four years. Councillors who have re- sisted every plan to bring in parking charges over the years found themselves swimming against the tide of change on this occasion. “There is no such thing as free parking,” declared the committee chairman, Coun. Mrs Brenda Smith, pointing out that the council had to buy land for car parks, then build, maintain and warden them. This was putting a bur- den of almost £500,000 a year on the council tax payers, she pointed out.
ON British Empire Day at New Milton Mr C. T. Curry, ed- itor of the Advertiser & Times, in thanking the Dominions for their valuable help in winning the war, recalled that many friendships were made locally when the Canadians were sta- tioned here. Referring to the fact that Capt. Charlies Upham, New Zealand Forces, the only dou- ble VC of the war, had recuper- ated at Barton-on-Sea after being liberated as a prison- er-of-war and had married in New Milton, Mr Curry pointed out that the Dominions had also helped to save us from starvation by sending us food, and that Capt. Upham was himself a sheep farmer. “Whatever label the govern- ment wears,” said the speaker, “I do urge them, apart from the fact that dollars are too dear to enable us to buy food from other countries, that they should help the Dominions who have helped us through- out the war by establishing a sound economic Empire food policy. “To do that, however, the government need funds to buy Empire food, and Thanks- giving Week affords us an op- portunity along these lines to show our appreciation to our great Dominions.” * * * * * * THE mayoress of Lyming- ton, who officiated at the indi - cators on Ladies Day, said that we had always been a proud and independent nation, and although today we were poor for a time yet we still had our pride. “If a census were taken of

Engineer David Bird told Tuesday’s meeting that a 300-metre cut-and-cover tun- nel immediately north of the lay-bys at Bratley Arch would present no technical prob- lems. “The road is already in a cutting and it would be feasi- ble to build a concrete tunnel over the existing road struc- ture, half below and half over ground”, he explained. The structure would then be cov- ered with one metre of soil to support vegetation. “The tunnel would have minimal visual impact on the Forest.” * * * * * * THE campaign against the expansion of Southampton
