Moulsford Prep School

MOULSFORD Prep School is an independent day and boarding school for boys aged four to 13, set in idyllic grounds of 30 acres beside the Thames near Goring and Streatley. Moulsford offers boys superb opportunities for learning while having fun. A restructured curriculum was successfully introduced in September 2017, which moves away from the traditional Common Entrance preparation. The focus is not only to prepare boys for senior schools, but also to ensure they have the skills for life beyond. The new curriculum encourages boys to have a go, take a well-thought-out risk, and, on occasion, fail. Exploration and enquiry is strongly encouraged and Mouls- ford life aims to develop boys’ resilience. Through the school’s activities programme, boys are offered opportunities to develop new Our programme gives boys the chance to try magic tricks, bike maintenance, bushcraft, photography, drama, sailing, genealogy, Subbuteo, chess and bridge, pantomime, parkour, night-running, golf, stand-up comedy, geocaching and many more. The most popular activities are kayaking, climbing, archery, cooking and ceramics. This non-compulsory activities programme has a 75 per cent skills and talents, while becoming a conscientious citizen.

the boys respond accordingly. There is a strong rapport between staff and boys, and a sense of mutual respect. Mental wellbeing for both staff and pupils is taken very seriously. The school is in regular contact with mental health charities to understand the latest research. There is also an independent school counsellor who is available to meet boys weekly. One measure of Moulsford’s success is the broad range of scholarships and exhibitions awarded each year. For 2019 at 13+, three boys have gained awards to Abingdon School, three to Radley, three to Magdalen College School, two to Cokethorpe, one to Bradfield, one to St Edward’s Oxford, one to Wellington and one to The Oratory, all across a range of academic, sports, music, drama, art, design & technology and all-rounder awards. In addition to these schools, others to which Moulsford boys progress this year include Marlborough, Eton, Shiplake and Pangbourne. A network of minibus routes offers easy daily transport to Moulsford, please contact the school for details. To find out more join the school an informal visit and tour at their next open days on Friday, Septem- ber 20 from 10am-noon or 1pm–3pm, or on Saturday, September 21 from 9am-noon. Please email admissions@mouls- ford.com for further details and to book a place.

take-up rate and the talented staff are able to offer these activities in-house and therefore most are free of charge. Moulsford’s reputation for sport, and particularly rugby, remains extremely strong. While sporting glory is always the goal and often achieved, the primary aim at Moulsford is to achieve opportunity across the

ability range, with all boys in teams A to F regularly playing competitive matches. Minor sports have also seen significant successes in golf, skiing, fencing and judo, with some of the less overtly sporty boys finding their niche and talent in these arenas. Music and drama remains popular at Moulsford and roughly

three-quarters of the boys from Years 3-8 play an instrument, with 14 per cent learning two. Places in the choir are hotly contested, with a total of 58 boys in the senior choir and 80 in the junior choir. As well as two outstanding productions a year, the highlight of the musical calendar is the open-air Summer Concert, with

the choirs, orchestra and various ensembles (wind, string, jazz) performing on a July evening on the lawn beside the river, with parents bringing picnics. The core values of respect, compassion and independence are at the heart of all that Moulsford does. Expectations are high in terms of manners and discipline, and

Headmistress Mrs Emma McKendrick commented: “The terrific exam results this year have given us much cause for celebration. “The girls have all worked extremely hard and thoroughly deserve these outstanding results. “I am proud of each one of them for both their academic success and for how they have fully embraced the enrichment and co-curricular opportunities available to them.” Downe House offers entry for day and boarding places in Years 7, 8, 9 and 12. No matter what the girls go on to do beyond Downe – and the sheer variety of the career paths of alumnae is testament to the school’s ethos – they all carry the enduring imprint of the Downe House DNA throughout their lives. The gift of time provided by a full boarding education enables girls to take on new challenges. They might participate in the Global Schools Exchange, stretch their imaginations in the arts, give back by volunteering at local charities, take on leadership roles or broaden their outlook through attending lectures. Being a Downe House girl means much more than a set of outstanding academic results, but of course they matter and the school is immensely proud of the

WHOEVER you are... whoever you want to be... be a Downe House girl. There is no such thing as a ‘typical Downe House girl’ because Downe House staff understand that every girl is an individual with her own interests and talents. Whether she is an artist and a scientist, an actress and a histo- rian, a coding whizz and a photographer – she will be equally valued, supported, stretched and challenged at every step of the way. So what is it that makes a Downe House girl? The answer is rooted deep in the Downe House DNA and the seven key characteristics – collaboration, resilience, creativity, aspiration, compassion, communication and outward looking. These are developed through the school’s programme of 21st-

always been central to St Helen’s ethos. In addition to the existing scheme offering means-tested bursaries up to 100 per cent of the fees from Year 5, the school is extremely excited to launch four brand new subject-specific bursaries for entry to St Helen’s sixth form in 2020. Applications are open to girls currently in a state-funded school wishing to study chemistry, mathematics/physics, economics or computer science. St Helen’s has a particular strength in the high numbers of students who go on to study STEM subjects at university, therefore the opportunity to support girls wanting to pursue these careers is there to be grasped. These bursaries are worth 100 per cent of school fees and will also cover additional costs such as school transport and curricu- lum activities. The school’s open day takes place on September 28, which is a perfect time to explore and find out more about everything St Helen’s offers. For those considering St Helen’s sixth form, A-level options open evening takes place on Thursday, October 3, and families who want to find out more about the junior department are welcomed on Friday, October 11, for an open breakfast event.

ST HELEN and St Katharine in Abingdon offers an academic, friendly and inspiring learning environment for girls aged 9–18, from junior department through to sixth form. The school aims to ensure that every pupil achieves success as she defines it, so that she can believe in herself, her talents and abilities, and feel prepared and equipped for life beyond school. Inside the classroom the focus is on a collaborative approach to learning which encourages discussion between teachers and pupils and exploration beyond the curriculum. The school’s outstanding academic record speaks for itself, while a wide variety of enrichment opportunities gives pupils plenty of opportunity to develop their personal skills and interests. Outside the classroom all pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves and to give new things a go. The broad and varied extracurricular programme, Beyond, boasts more than 100 extracurricular clubs and societies, some run by pupils. Pupils can participate purely for fun or follow their strengths and achieve excellence through teams and groups or music and drama productions. From fencing and photography to Mandarin and trips abroad, as well as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Young Enterprise, it

form pupils space to discuss the bigger things in life. Ensembles exist within the music department for practically any instrument going and – among many others – fencing and Tae Kwon Do thrive in the sports centre. The sixth form is a particularly important part of pupils’ development. It is the time when students take control of their learning, pursue the subjects they feel passionate about and are given the freedom and independence to manage their own experiences.

Continuing to shape the best possible learning and social experience for the sixth form, the school has applied for planning permission for a new building, providing nine classrooms, a lecture / performance space, a café, study areas and general social and work space. The guiding principle is to create a building which anticipates the feel of a university. Welcoming pupils whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the fees through an extensive bursaries scheme has

is about extending interests, making friends across age groups and building confidence and self-belief. Beyond includes its fair share of quirky pursuits which are warmly embraced by pupils – there is a great appetite in the school to dive into ‘unexpected’ activities. This can be seen in GreenPower, which involves building and racing a battery-powered car, Minecraft develops IT skills alongside light-hearted fun, Psychology Book Club and Philosophy Society give sixth

It is characterised by academic enquiry, intellectual curiosity and leadership across the whole school community. The breadth of the curriculum in sixth form ensures that every pupil can participate in a personalised programme of study that is aligned with her passions and ambitions. Pupils can also explore their subjects above and beyond the classroom through an extensive enrichment programme. Plans for the future include a new sixth form centre.

Elstree School

ELSTREE School is a day and boarding school for children aged 3-13 in Woolhampton, Berkshire. Set in idyllic grounds of 150 acres, only an hour by car from west London, Elstree offers a secure and stimulating environment for children to be nurtured and inspired. From September 2020, Elstree will become a fully coeduca- tional school, meaning girls as well as boys, can receive an education from Nursery to Year 8. Starting in Pre-Prep, the transition to Prep is smooth and inclusive. Proud of its rich history and reputation as a school with high academic, creative and sporting achievements, pupils from Elstree have gained places to some of the country’s top senior schools, including Bradfield, Eton, Harrow, Radley and Winchester. Forty-five scholarships and exhibitions have been awarded to Elstree pupils since 2015. While success is something celebrated, Elstree recognises that being open, compassionate and tolerant of others is equally important. Through enrichment programmes and an outstanding array of extra curriculum activities, Elstree provides an environment where both girls and boys can develop the skills necessary to thrive in today’s world. Elstree is large enough to accommodate two state-of-the- art science laboratories, a new music school, a full size all-

been learned in the previous year, but at every level, pupils are helped to: n Work out how to deal with chal- lenges in their lives, such as friendships, self-confidence and peer pressure, and find ways to look after each other as well as themselves n Keep in touch with what’s going on in the world, from politics to medicine and the environment, encouraging them to form opinions based on evidence, question received opinions and think independently n Understand better the issues and opportunities they may encounter by bringing in outside speakers with experience of different issues The fact that complementary curriculum lessons are on the timetable and not an optional extra demonstrates the

importance attached to this aspect of a Dauntsey’s education. Pupils are encouraged to be aware of their individual strengths and qualities and to look after themselves and those around them. “This year in Complementary Curriculum we have learnt about friendship and relationships, we have discussed human rights, how we should treat others both as individuals and as a society. “The lessons have really made me think about issues I hadn’t considered before,” said Juliet, Third Form. Headmaster Mark Lascelles said: “Education isn’t confined to a classroom. I want our pupils to gain practical skills, to learn more about themselves and work within a team as well as enjoy a welcome contrast to the intensity of exams,”

“DAUNTSEY’S complementary curriculum is astonishingly wide-ranging, but every topic is designed to prepare pupils for a healthy, happy and successful life,” says head of department Anais Seager. Exam results are important, but there’s a lot that even the most committed school can ’t teach within the confines of GCSEs and A-levels. The complementary cur iculum exists to bridge the gap between classroom and life skills, with the aim of equipping pupils to make informed choices, whether they’re dealing with the complexity of relationships, balancing a budget or deciding where to cast a vote. The process is continuous, from personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education in the Lower School to general studies in the Sixth Form. Each stage builds on what has

weather pitch, outdoor pool, forest for outdoor learning and camping, and a lake for kayak- ing, yet with an intake of around 200, is small enough to be personal, family-focused and intimate. The school’s last ISI Inspection Report (2015) stated: “Elstree School is highly successful in meeting its aim of providing a first class all-round education, while embedding the values of hard work, kindness to others and making the most of opportunities. This is thanks to an excellent curriculum and

extra-curricular opportunities and to excellent teaching, which inspires and motivates pupils to want to learn.” Buses run daily from Hungerford, Peasemore, West Reading and Basingstoke, and the school day can be extended with after-school care provision. Elstree’s next open morning is on Saturday, October 12, between 10am and noon. To book your place, contact the Registrar by emailing: registrar@elstreeschool.org.uk or call: (0118) 971 3302.

Thorngrove School THORNGROVE School is a thriving co-educational day preparatory school for children aged two-and-a-half to 13 years old. Founded in 1988, the school is situated in the village of

better reasoning ability. This is important for their future as it helps them to solve problems and look for solutions in a diverse environment. There are strong links with the science department and there is cross-curricular work completed. Maths and science days build links and show how the subjects are interdependent. The department uses various strategies and interactive games such as Kahoot – pupils race one another to beat the clock. The use of maths games creates a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject, such as building and strengthening mental and tables ability using the DoodleMaths and TTRockstars programmes. Pupils also take part in maths competitions such as Quiz Club, the Dauntsey’s Dodecahedron and the school is a member of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, participating in their challenges. The school invites you to come and visit to find out how a Thorngrove education could benefit your child. The next Open Morning is Friday, October 4, from 9am to 11am. To book a place or to arrange an appointment on a day that suits you, please contact the registrar, Bev O’Brien, by emailing bobrien@thorngroveschool.co.uk or phone the school office on (01635) 253172.

Highclere, just four miles south of Newbury. It is set in 25 acres of Hampshire countryside and includes its own woodland. At Thorngrove, the children’s natural curiosity is encouraged, teaching in a practical way and allowing them to develop and nurture their sense of wonder and enthusiasm for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), both inside and outside of the classroom. A sound and thorough knowledge of the world of science is crucial in helping our children understand their life and responsibilities in the 21st century as well as the world’s future prosperity. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils begin to develop how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave oversubscribed weekly Science Club where they gain hands on experience of explosions, slime and ‘potions’ that they crave. ICT and computing is very exciting for students at Thorngrove. A new curriculum focused on project-based learning and real life ICT and computing application is proving to be engaging and enjoyable and and to analyse causes. pupil progress is taking huge leaps forward. In ICT some of the pupils recently created spreadsheets and graphs about world weather. They then used their data to write a weather report and read it out in front of a green screen, making it look like they were in a professional news studio. Other children are using digital cameras to capture pictures of things they consider beautiful around the school site, some of which they will Photoshop. They will use the images to create an impactful presentation about real and fake beauty. In computing, children are

and every pupil has a chance to practise before embarking on the use of expensive materials for their main projects. Recent projects have included slotted toys, acrylic clocks and maze games. The maths department at Thorngrove endeavours to foster a love of mathematics and a strong desire to learn more about the subject. It is important for pupils to realise that mathematics is essential and critical to science, technology and engineering. Enabling pupils to enjoy and be curious about maths helps them to think analytically and have

programming robots, programming and marketing their own computer games and using HTML code to create their own websites. There is some wonderful logical thinking, debugging and problem solving happening across the computing curriculum. There is a strong focus on Digital Citizenship and staying safe online, which arguably is the most important learning for modern pupils. This year the older children will be connected to the new virtual learning platform through the introduction of individual Chromebooks.

Exciting times for the Middle and Upper School. Design and technology is taught in a separate and well-resourced D&T centre. The pupils are able to discover the different stages of the design process and the various tools (including bandsaws, pillar drills and circular saws), materials and techniques to turn their dreams and ideas into reality. There is hardly anything more fulfilling for a pupil than to produce a quality item with their own imagination and their own hands: a rewarding tangible three- dimensional proof of their ability. A Wychwood education fires the imagination, engages the soul, stimulates the brain and opens up the world for our girls. Wychwood’s small size means that we offer individual challenge and pastoral care to a far greater extent than can larger institutions. As a result, our girls gain excellent academic results, as shown by our recent A-level and GCSE results, and emerge confident and well prepared for their futures. Our size also affords us great flexibility, to offer new subjects, to teach different classes in different ways to suit their needs or to provide boarding as needed even for just one night.

Our girls develop their own passions and interests and remain tolerant of and open to those of others. To me, helping girls to develop a clear sense of self and personal happiness is at the root of all Wychwood does. During her time at Wychwood we help each girl discover what it means to be happy, as this is the foundation upon which lifelong success is built. Girls finish their school days being able to deal effectively with the adult world into which they emerge, knowing that they will always be part of Wychwood, even as they become part of a global community. CONSISTENCY is key As we start the academic year, my eighth as Head of Wychwood, I reflect on the changes happening in education, particularly in Oxford. At Wychwood, a unique day and boarding school for 120 girls aged 11-18, our small size and settled leadership and teaching team allows us to know each child, her strengths and her weaknesses. Too many girls go through education hiding their talents away and only in a small school can this be effectively and sensitively challenged. We help as necessary, praise and recognise the many achievements great and small that make up a school life and exhort and remind when required. The consistency of the staff who lead and teach is critical to building the relationships,
