Jennie reaches 100 by ‘behaving myself’
A SOCIALLY distanced garden get-together and Zoom calls with relatives helped ensure 100-year-old birthday girl Jen- nie Wiggett could still celebrate her century in style. Popular with staff at Moor- land House Care Home in Barton, where she has been a resident for the last three years, Jennie marked her mile- stone birthday on 27th Decem- ber. She quipped: “You’ve got to be joking – I’m not 100, you’re pulling my leg!” To ensure her birthday was special despite the pandem- ic restrictions, staff arranged for a garden visit with her son Ken and daughter-in-law Shei- la, as well as chatting with many other family members on
ly replied: “Because I behaved myself.” Jennie was born in Bury, Lancashire, and grew up in a terraced house with her sister Rene and her seamstress moth- er and railway inspector father. She had vivid memories as a young woman of bombing raids during the Second World War. Jennie married Vincent Bai- ley in 1943 and together they had two sons and a daughter. She worked as a seamstress un- til war broke out, when she be- came an auxiliary nurse. The family later travelled to Egypt with the army when Vin- cent was based there, and re- turned to live at a military site in Bransgore. Jennie was widowed but subsequently married Fred
Wiggett in 1967. She and Fred lived in Gore Road, New Mil- ton, where they owned an engi- neering business, Wiggett and Bailey, manufacturing motor- cycle components for Rickman Brothers. Jennie enjoyed crochet and sewing, making period replica army uniforms for museums, and even created daughter-in- law Sheila’s wedding dress. She always knitted jumpers for her family at Christmas. After retiring in 1986, Jennie and Fred moved to Majorca for a few years, and then returned to New Milton where Jennie re- mained until her move to Moor- land House nearly three years ago. She has seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

AN idyllic scene from the New Forest is set to feature as one of 10 special Royal Mail stamps celebrating the 70th anniversa- ry of the founding of Britain’s national parks. It is the first of the Royal Mail’s special stamps issues for 2021 and was applauded by New Forest National Park Authority chair Professor Gavin Parker. “The UK’s national parks are truly special and it’s great to see the Royal Mail recognising our best landscapes in this way, including the New Forest, of course,” he said. “The iconic New Forest po- Misty scene part of collection celebrating UK’s national parks By JON WALLER POPPY collections in Brocken- hurst and Sway raised nearly £8,200 for the Royal British Le- gion in 2020. Although door-to-door and street collections were not pos- sible, the branch collected al- most £3,250 alone from tins and poppy boxes in businesses in the villages. The rest was made up of donations, wreaths and oth- er collection points such as a memory tree at Maria Jones’ funeral home in Brockenhurst. Mrs Jones is the organiser for the branch. “This is a remarkable achieve- ment and we thank Maria and

The district is one of 10 of the nation’s 15 national parks that will feature on the stamps, which go on sale from next Thursday. Philip Parker, from the Royal Mail, commented: “Ten spec- tacular national parks have been captured in stunning pho- tographs that reflect their di - versity and splendour. “We are proud to be able to share the beauty of these parks on stamps at a time when so many of us have had our travel restricted.” her family, but also the commu- nity for digging deep despite the current problems,” said Brockenhurst RBL chair Cap- tain Mike Matthews. “All the money collected goes to helping ex-service people and their families who are in need. It does show that despite the services and acts of remem- brance being cancelled, there is still a strong commitment to help those who made a sacrifice for the country.” Elsewhere, the New Milton and District RBL branch has thanked the Rev. The Royal Mail said it decid- ed to honour national parks be- cause the first four – the Peak District, Lake District, Dart- moor and Snowdonia – were founded in 1951 as the outcome of decades of public effort to open up the countryside to or- dinary people. It said: “The UK’s nation- al parks cover a breathtaking range of natural environments, from cold tundra to temper- ate rainforest, from gigantic sea cliffs to rolling chalk hills, from razor-sharp mountains to marshy wetlands. “They are also places where people have lived, worked, wor- shipped, farmed and traded for centuries, in ways that have shaped – and been shaped by – the surrounding environment. “These landscapes are 15 unique combinations of human culture and natural history.” hall meeting room for its 2021 poppy appeal, having lost its home at the town’s Memorial Centre.
