Lockdown plea after RNLI’s busyweek

Driver banned A MOTORIST who was more than twice the legal drink- drive limit has been banned from the roads for 12 months. Lyndsey Saudan (39), of Pauletts Lane in Calmore, was stopped by police in Tot- ton on 24th October last year. She pleaded guilty to one count of drink-driving and was fined £75 by Southamp - ton magistrates. She must also pay £180 court costs and complete a 15-day impaired drivers’ course. Masks donated THE New Forest Basics Bank charity has received a dona- tion of face coverings from a housing developer. Winchester-based Lifestory has given away 1,000 masks to organisations in locations across the south where it has retirement properties. As well as being worn by volun- teers at the Lymington-based food bank, the masks can be sold to the public. “Helping the local com- munity is an important part of the Lifestory ethos,” said Marc Evans, managing di - rector at Lifestory south and south-west. Home rejected PLANS for a bungalow in Brockenhurst have been dismissed by a government inspector. An initial application for land off Armstrong Lane was thrown out by the nation- al park authority, and a subsequent appeal has also been rejected on the grounds the building would appear cramped and at odds with neighbouring homes. The inspector added it was likely future occupants would seek the removal of two sub- stantial protected oak trees on the plot. Cliff rescue alert RESCUERS rushed to Barton amid reports a man and his dog were stuck on the cliff. The alarm was raised at around 1.46pm on 27th De - cember, but both the owner and his pet had managed to get themselves back to safety by the time coastguard teams from Lymington and Southbourne arrived at the scene near Hoburne Naish Holiday Park.

SAILORS were urged to pay heed to pandemic restrictions after a busy week for rescu- ers on the New Forest and Christchurch coast. Lymington RNLI issued the warning before lockdown was announced after its lifeboat crews responded to several call- outs within 24 hours – helping the occupants of two stricken boats and dealing with distress flares fired in the town. The first callout, around 4.40pm on Saturday, was to a 26ft yacht suffering engine problems in the Solent, be - tween Hurst Castle and the Needles. RNLI helm Simon Nuding said afterwards the boat could have been grounded on the shingle bank within minutes. It was safely towed with its crew of three back to the harbour mas- ter’s pontoon in Lymington. At around 1.40pm the next day, the lifeboat assisted two people on a dinghy that had lost its mast, with its safety boat also suffering engine failure. Both vessels were taken back to Lymington. “THEY are lethal weapons” – that was a rescue team’s warning after distress flares which launchataround200mph were set off with fireworks in a Lymington street. Crew from HM Coastguard Lymington responded along with police tomultiple 999 calls reporting red distress signals in the vicinity of Undershore Road around 5.45pm on Sunday. As it investigated the area, the coastguard team also called out the local RNLI

LOCAL environmental groups have united in a new campaign urging local gardeners to give bees and butterflies a boost. Conservation Connection New Forest South was brought together by Cllr Fran Carpen- ter, inspired by Channel 4 pro - gramme Jimmy’s Big Bee Res- cue. The two-part TV show by farmer and presenter Jimmy Doherty looks at his attempt to encourage wildflowers to boost the bee population, and sup - port other insects. Cllr Carpenter said: “I know individual members and the excellent work of these groups well and thought their com- bined expertise, knowledge and skills in local conservation work would be valuable – not only to share with each other, but also to enthuse local residents to want to enhance the wildlife habitat value of their own out- door spaces, whether it be a large garden or a window box.” The local initiative is made up of members from Friends of Ballard Water Meadow, Milford Conservation Volunteers, Hord - le Environment Group, Hordle Parish Council, Tiptoe Green NO police action will be tak- en in relation to a stabbing in- cident outside a New Milton home, Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed. As reported in the A&T, in October 2019 a 56-year-old man suffered wounds to his arm and body in an alleged assault out- side a house in Gore Road just before 5.30am.

Trust and New Forest Friends of the Earth, plus local wood - land manager and educator Paul Brockman. Paul said: “If people were able to dedicate a small area of their gardens to nature, wheth - er it was wildflowers or grow - ing one’s own fruit and veg, we could create a massive wildlife habitat. “People’s gardens cover a vast amount of land and this could be turned into a huge, connect - ed bee and butterfly-friendly environment.” Pam Petherbridge, treasur - er and membership secretary of Friends of Ballard Water Meadow, added: “Bee species have declined since 1980 and I fully support Jimmy Doherty’s attempts to demonstrate that further declines are not inevi- table. “I encourage the local com- munity to take a different look at how they arrange their gar- dens, parks, verges and other open spaces in order to support bees.” To find out more contact 07867 502624 or visit www.con servationconnectionnfs.org.uk The victim was taken by am- bulance to hospital, but the police said his injuries were not thought to have been life-threatening. Asked for an update this week, a Hampshire police spokesperson told the A&T: “Having carried out a thorough investigation, those arrested will have no further action tak- en against them.”

which scoured the Lymington River. Further reports of fireworks nearby resulted in the coastguard team recovering six spent flare canisters in Monument Lane. A spokesperson for the unit said: “Firing of a red flare in a non-distress situation diverts valuable land, sea and air rescue assets away from a genuine search-and-rescue emergency. “These pyrotechnics are government announced the full lockdown on Monday night. A Lymington RNLI spokes- person said the station’s volun- teer crew was always ready to launch but urged people to take more care. She said: “We would advise anyone considering taking to the water, or visiting the coast, to make sure they are up to date with the latest govern-

ter or coast, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.” Mudeford RNLI’s duty helm alerted colleagues after spotting a 20ft motor cruiser grounded on a sandbar at the entrance to Christchurch Har- bour as he walked along Avon Beach with his family on Satur- day. A towline was used to pull free the vessel, which had three people on board. Shortly after 3pm last Tues- day, coastguard teams from Lymington and Hill Head were sent with a Calshot RNLI crew to a boat with engine failure stuck in mud near Fawley pow- er station. Low water prevented the lifeboat from getting near so, amid failing light, the Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter was deployed from Lee-on-Solent to reach the two stricken men, who were in their 40s and from Salisbury. Both were winched to the aircraft and flown to a landing site set up by the Lymington coastguard team near Fawley oil refinery.
