Stop newsagent’s shop in Fair- view Parade, Beaulieu Road, Hythe. * * * * * * NEW Forest District Coun- cil planners have now granted Salisbury Health Care Trust permission to convert the for- mer hotel Waterford House, a large property to the corner of Barton Court and Station Roads, New Milton, into a clin- ic for mental health patients from within the New Forest area, including the Waterside and Totton. This will replace the service now being offered at the Gra- ham Unit in Lymington Day Hospital, next to the Infirma - ry on East Hill, Lymington – though the A&T has learned this week that any fears by the present staff affected there can be allayed. * * * * * * THE number of people caught drinking and driv- ing in Hampshire and Dorset over Christmas and New Year went up, although national- ly there was an 8% reduction. Dorset’s increase came about even though police carried out fewer roadside tests than last year, but as Hampshire do not keep records of the number of roadside tests a similar com- parison with 1994 is not pos- sible. In Hampshire, 176 tests were positive and 25 road accidents were believed due to drivers having consumed excess al- cohol. Traffic inspector Roger Price said: “This represents an increase of 25% on last year’s figures.” A 55% increase in positive test results in the New Forest area was recorded, and 14 drivers will shortly have to appear at Lyndhurst Magis- trates’ Court.

25 YEARS AGO A SYNDICATE of Esso em- ployees from the Fawley re- finery piled into a Land Rov - er Discovery on Wednesday morning, bound for Reigate in Surrey. They stopped for breakfast at a Happy Eater, before arriving at the Camelot Lottery offices – where they each became £35,586.43 richer. They were amongst 15 to re- ceive £250,995 cheques around the country, after guessing five winning numbers plus the bo- nus number: 32, 39, 42, 43, 45 and 36 – and had the Fawley men chosen the missing num- ber 6, they would have won the £23.9m jackpot, which instead is added to this weekend’s £40m roll-over. The seven are longstand- ing friends from different sec- tions of the refinery, who for years have played cards in the canteen during the mid-day break. Each has paid £1 a week since the Lottery first started, and up until last weekend had only collected a few £10 wins to show for the tickets which they purchase from the One- Beehive Hill, struck a hayrick in a field and then crashed through an oak in the centre of the field. 75 YEARS AGO: Two local boys, Derek Goodall (15) and Peter West (17) were heroes in an RAF aeroplane smash, rescuing three of the crew while the aircraft was burning. Another was later rescued by the Fire Brigade, while the fifth was found wandering aimlessly by the boys and made comfortable. The Avro York was engaged in a practice flight. It appar - ently first hit a tree at

NEW Milton St John Ambu- lance Brigade answered a total of 226 cases in the year ending December last, this being a decrease of 28 on the previous year’s total. Sick patients number 219 (61 males and 158 females), being a decrease of 42 on the 1944 figures; road accidents totalled 27 (14 males and 13 females), being an increase of one; the number of home or work accident patients at- tended was 20 (10 of each sex, this being an increase of 13). There was one death from the road accidents and three from home and work acci- dents. The ambulance trav- elled a total of 6,770 miles. * * * * * * MEMBERS of the War Re- serve Constabulary of the New Forest Division of the Hamp- shire Joint Police Force, who are now being demobilised in Hampshire and returning to civil life, held a farewell din- ner and concert at the Ma- sonic Hall, Lymington, when their war work was highly praised and they were cordial- ly thanked. 50 YEARS AGO SIX people were hurt – four being admitted to hospitals – after jumping for their lives, when fire swept through the Beaulieu Road Hotel, early on Tuesday morning. By Thurs- day, only one patient had been discharged, and one man re- mained critically ill. With corridors of the two-storey hotel blocked by dense smoke and flames, guests in the northern part of the building – still in their nightclothes – could not reach the two staircases. Most of

them made a 15ft drop from the bedroom windows to land on tarmacadam or concrete. Three of the injured were admitted to the Southamp- ton General Hospital and one, who received serious burns, was admitted to Odstock Hos- pital, Salisbury. Two others also received in- juries, but were not detained. Half of the hotel’s 14 bed- rooms were destroyed on the first floor, and most of the roof fell in. On the ground floor, the lounge and offices were badly damaged. Manageress of the hotel for the last 10 years, Mrs Iris West, sustained a broken ankle after her jump to safety, but was able to leave the Royal South Hants Hospital after treat- ment. * * * * * * A CRY of protest at the felling of oak and beech trees along the A337 Brockenhurst to Lyndhurst road at Whitley Wood has been voiced to the Forestry Commission at Lyn- dhurst by New Forest cam- paigner Mrs Jean Cobb.

The fellings have come at a time when the minister of ag- riculture is still considering the felling policy in the Forest, together with the ban on hard- wood felling which he imposed three months ago. Giving his reasons for felling the trees, a Forestry Commis- sion spokesman said that the trees felled at Whitley Wood were dangerous to users of the road, but Mrs Cobb, who headed the original campaign which led to the ban on felling, claimed that only one was rot- ten. * * * * * * THE arrangements pro- posed by the county council for financing the capital cost of £145,000 for the joint provi- sion of a sports hall and swim- ming pool in conjunction with the proposed improvements to the Upper Arnewood Sec- ondary School, New Milton, have been approved by Lym- ington council. The county is to pay 48% of the cost, leaving 52% to be shared between the boroughs of Christchurch and Lymington.
