You will need the following: n Beads from small to large. You have six sides to each star so make sure you have the right numbers of beads. If you have a broken bracelet or necklace, then repurpose the beads. n A pair of round-nosed pliers to close each end. n A star-shaped wire frame obtained from craft and bead shops. n A bead mat or suitable surface so you don’t lose the beads. n Ribbon or wire to make your hanger. 1 Plan your design by starting with your smallest bead. The arms are close together at the centre so be careful to have enough room for six beads around. 2 Once you are happy with your design then create a hook at the top using the round nose pliers. It is essential you do this at each point completion. No one wants to turn the star and lose all their beads – it does happen. 3 Recreate this pattern on all six points, remembering to create a hook at the top, but only after checking the pattern is correct. 4 Once completed, create a hanger using ribbon or wire and utilise one of your hooks to attach. Saturday, December 5, marks the 8th anniversary of Small Business Saturday, which is a grassroots campaign we support each year as it encourages us all to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses with our spending. It had a massive presence in Newbury last year as the town was on their ‘Big Blue Bus’ tour. This year, although scaled back, the day will still be an opportunity to discover local independent businesses and to
pick up any last minute Christmas shopping.
WE at West Berkshire Council have been proud to see the lengths our shops and restaurants went to in order to keep their customers safe and to keep our district open for business this summer and autumn. From screens, to floor markings, to plentiful hand sanitiser supplies, they have gone above and beyond to create a secure shopping environment. We also implemented a range of Covid-19 related safety measures across our high streets to enable safe, socially distanced shop- ping. This has included support for businesses to expand their outdoor space and changes to road layouts as well as signage and practical advice on the ground to advise premises how best to operate as the seasons change. SINCE 2006 the Wale family has been making award-winning cider and perry with full juice from real fruit. Being sugar and gluten-free it’s also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Tutts Clump Cider is a family business that was set up in 2006 by Tim Wale. Tim – who is an agricultural/motor engineer by trade – was born in the hamlet of Tutts Clump in West Berkshire and still lives there. Tim is assisted by his wife and five daughters. Cider-making started as a hobby with production of some 25 litres. By 2013 they were using around 90 tonnes of home-counties grown apples and crafting some 60,000 litres of Proper Cider, which is increasing year on year. They do not filter, pasturise or carbonate their products and the only additives are sucralose and sulphites in small quantities. They do everything in-house and package in bottles, cans, bag in box, casks and kegs. Tutts Clump are also SALSA approved. A Legion of helpers
THE Valley Veterinary Group is a long-standing independent business with three sites across West Berkshire. Christmas is often a busy time in the veterinary world with the ready availability of so many tasty treats – which some of our canine friends just cannot resist. Please do be aware that many of the Christmas foods we enjoy can be toxic to our pets – chocolate, dried fruit (mince pies, Christmas cake and pudding), macadamia nuts and, of course, alcohol should never be given to pets. It’s not just food – decorations can also prove irresistible to our pets. A cat who has ingested tinsel is certainly not an uncommon sight at the vets at Christmas time. Fireworks are another seasonal issue our beloved pets face every year, which for some can be an extremely traumatic experience. Please do contact the surgery for advice if you are concerned about this. There are lots of solutions they can discuss with you and decide what is most appropriate to try with your animal. THE RBL was formed in 1921 to look after the needs of the service personnel and their dependants coming home after the First World War, and is still doing the same work now as conflicts continue throughout the world. Newbury RBL, based in Pelican Lane, encompasses two areas – the branches and the club which, although operating under different rules, work together for the same end product – the welfare of its members. The branch and women’s section is the welfare arm looking after the needs of the serving and ex-service community and their dependants – this can include mobility needs, white goods in homes or assistance with travel to hospital appointments. All welfare work is strictly confidential and the community support officer David Glover can be contacted via email: davey.glover9@btinternet.com or telephone 07967775182. The legion organises the annual poppy appeal and attends various functions and events to put the work they do in the public eye. Newbury RBL also supports the Geenham memorials with a service on December 12 at noon every year, and assists the town council in any way they can. The club, which is the social side of the RBL, organises various events for members, including twice-weekly bingo, Friday night sing along and meat raffle, darts teams, snooker, monthly country and western evening and various Saturday evening entertainment, Sunday lunches and Sunday evening quiz. It all helps to raise money to assist the welfare team in their work. The club has a large hall and a smaller suite able to host weddings social gatherings and meetings and can cater from a finger buffet to a silver service dinner. As with all other organizations they always welcome new members who can give a little or a lot of their time to assist in carrying out their ever growing workload. You do not have to be ex-service to join the RBL – everyone is welcome at any age. Under 18s become youth members and there are cadet forces who are affiliated to the RBL and do sterling work. Hopefully some of the cadets will continue with their membership into adult life and provide the next generation of members.
