Ready, steady shop – now is the time to shop for the festive season in bustling NewMilton
On line shopping may be easier and more convenient and many retailers offer both but do you want to spend hours on your lap - top or phone sifting through the plethora of gifts and food which may turn up on time or what you actually wanted? And what a hassle it can be packaging and posting returns and waiting for a replacement or a refund. Buying more of your Christmas dinner ingredients, loved ones’ presents or home decorations from a local business could double the amount of money that stays in your community, according to new research. After a year of upheaval for both large and small shops, this Christmas could be a critical time for many so that’s why we should spend as much as possible locally.
New Milton throughout the decades has seen shops come and go but still retains an excellent mix of retailers and services to meet every day needs.

By choosing to shop local this Christmas, shoppers could double the amount of money that stays in their local area at a critical time for small businesses. According to
per cent of money locally, but many shoppers say they would be willing to spend half of their mon- ey with local businesses. This Christmas, consumers plan to show their local businesses some love with 81% of those sur - veyed planning to give them as much, or more, support than be - fore the Covid-19 pandemic. New Milton reflects this picture as there are more than a hundred different types of shops and sup - pliers – many small and medium size independents offering an ar - ray of products and services. They range from the major su - permarkets and department store to the smaller, independent out - lets who can offer niche products which you may find difficult to buy elsewhere. Food is obviously top of the list but what is so surprising is that
there are many outlets which of - fer alternative and health relat- ed products as well as local and worldwide produce. So hold your breath and the fol - lowing is a list though by no means comprehensive of what is avail- able in and around New Milton - pharmacies, greengrocers, jewel - lers, builders and DIY merchants, camping and outdoor specialists, furniture – both new and vintage - newsagents, pet supplies, ladies and gents clothing, hairdressers and beauticians, charity shops, florist and dry cleaners, floor and carpet suppliers, shoe shops and repairers, motor parts and acces- sories, kitchen design and many others. While out shopping you can take a break at the choice of res- taurants, cafes and pubs offering dishes from fast food and tradi- tional meals to more sophisticated dining. So when it comes to it, New Mil- ton has almost everything you are looking for without the need hav - ing to travel to neighbouring larger towns with the headache of park- ing and traffic jams. While we may believe that shop- ping in big towns is where we have a much larger choice, over half of people surveyed by Visa say it’s im - portant to them to shop locally be- cause they know how much their custom means, while 43% say they get a boost of happiness when they support local shopkeepers.
research by Visa, for every £10 we spend with a local business, more than a third (£3.80) stays within the area, showing the value of shopping locally.
