works needed at Becton Bun- ny, Barton, and for the protec- tion of the sewer outfall there which has been threatened by considerable cliff falls in re- cent months. 25 YEARS AGO A NEW MILTON shepherd has warned he will shoot any dog seen pestering his sheep. Eight lambs belonging to Phil Martin were savagely attacked in a field at Downton last week. One had its throat ripped out and died, and at least two oth- ers were badly injured and are fighting for their lives. The year-old Poll / Dor- set cross sheep, each worth between £50 and £60, were mauled in a field at Hoopers Hill, close to land at Ashley Manor Farm, where Mr Martin keeps a watch over a flock of some 700 sheep belonging to his boss, Michael Wilson. Mr Martin says the owner of the dog or dogs responsible for attacking his sheep must know what they have been doing. “The injuries were so severe the dogs will have been covered in blood,” he said, adding that two lurcher-types had been seen in the vicinity. * * * * * * THE balaclava “flasher” has exposed himself again in the New Forest. And the loca- tion has again been near the Naked Man at Wilverley. He exposed himself to a woman walker from Highcliffe at about 1.30pm on Friday in last week. She was shaken but unharmed. Police carried out a search of the area but found no trace of the man, thought to be in his twenties. He was tall and of a slim build and was wearing ski pants and a gold top.

Air Ministry or whoever else was responsible. A notice on a footbridge leading to the beach restrict- ed use at certain times. If such action was taken whilst we were still at war it would have been a different matter. This sort of thing was going on all over the country. * * * * * * LYMINGTON Town Council is protesting to the Home Of- fice at the “unwarranted cost of maintaining a large NFS personnel” in the borough. The Mayor (Ald. Capt. Goodhart) said at Wednes- day’s meeting he believed there were still eight full-time men in Lymington. He was not prepared to say how many there were at New Milton, but there were quite a number. “In fact it is far too many,” the Mayor commented. “In pre-war days we had no whole- time men, but we had a very efficient fire brigade at both ends of the borough. They turned out very quickly, got to the fires, and put them out.” The council is also to protest against the proposed use of the air-raid siren in Lymington for summoning the retained men for fire calls, the adminis - tration committee stating that it was felt the siren would have a bad psychological effect on many of the public. 50 YEARS AGO SAMMY Miller, who lives in Barton, has a motorcycle business in Highcliffe, and has been described as “the great - est trials rider of all time” by Motor Cycle News, has an- nounced that he is giving up. “I will be 38 next birthday, and it is becoming a bit of an

LYMINGTON Town Coun- cil on Wednesday, the Mayor (Ald. Capt. B. H. Goodhart, M.C., J.P.) presiding, approved contracts for the erection of 35 dwellings at Ashley. At their meeting on Novem- ber 22nd, the housing commit- tee decided to recommend the council to accept a tender from Messrs H. H. Drew and Son, to build 21 houses at a total cost of £23,810, and another from Messrs. F. M. Whitcher for four houses and eight bungalows at a total cost of £10,830, the figures being the same as for council’s houses at Highfield, Lymington. * * * * * * THE Air Ministry’s requisi- tioning of a strip of the fore- shore, measuring 300ft by 200ft, at Keyhaven was crit- icised at Lymington Council on Wednesday. The town plan- ning committee stated it con- sidered the use of the land in connection with target prac- tice should not be permitted in a popular area used as a hol- iday resort in the summer and that it would interfere with navigation and fishing. There were, the committee felt, other sites along the coast for prac- tice grounds. It was agreed to protest to the Air Ministry and ask that the land be de-requisi- tioned. The town Clerk (Mr F. J. Beeching) said complaints had already been referenced to the authorities. The Major (Ald. Capt. Goodhart), said no rep- resentations had been made to the council before struc- tures and notices were erected on the site and he thought it extremely high-handed of the

agement’s arrangements to deal with a possible power cut on Wednesday morning. At the time of going to press on Thursday the dispute was continuing, but no one at Well- worthy was available to com- ment, either the management or shop stewards at the factory. Mr Ron Chapman, district officer, and regional officer for the engineering membership, of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, told the A&T the trouble “arose from the present power position”, and explained: “There is still an element of doubt of whether we shall be able to go through the day without a power cut, and the company saw fit, quite properly, to discuss with the Stanford Road works the pros- pects of Wednesday’s possible power cuts.” * * * * * * AT a special meeting on Monday, Lymington Coun- cil approved the spending of nearly £20,000 for emergency

effort,” he said after visiting the Bultaco factory last week. “I am retiring from national and international trials, but I shall continue to compete in open-to-centre trials.” He made it clear to the A&T that he still hopes to ride lo- cally, and to encourage prom- ising youngsters who take up the sport, and he will perhaps give instruction. Sammy has dominated the sport for more than 10 years, winning the Scottish Six Days trial five times, the British Ex - perts’ trial six times and the Scott seven times. He won the Hurst Cup for the 13th time before clinching his second European championship last season. He will not try for his 17th win in the Walter Rusk Memorial trial this Christmas. * * * * * * A WALK-OUT of the en- tire foundry at Wellworthy’s Ampress works in Lymington took place on Wednesday, fol- lowing a dispute over the man-
