Splitting towns...hotel blaze...increasing digits 75 YEARS AGO

ley Duncan Osborne, master of Southampton Seamen’s Or- phanage for Boys. The orphanage, which was formerly at Tremona Court, Shirley Warren, Southampton, was evacuated to Buckland House shortly before the out- break of the war. Mr Osborne was highly suc- cessful in his handling of boys and in the general organisa- tion of the orphanage, and he was held in great esteem by all connected with it. In the 1914-18 war he served with the balloon section of the RFC, and also went to Greece and Turkey in connection with the Armenian Relief Fund. He was a keen amateur horticul- turalist and an authority on tomato growing. 50 YEARS AGO A PILLAR of smoke which could be seen for miles drew scores of sightseers to Balmer Lawn, Brockenhurst, on Mon- day afternoon when a severe fire caused damage of over £50,000 to the fabric of the well-known hotel. Police patrols were called in to control traffic and keep the roads open as sightseers gath- ered at the scene of one of the most spectacular local fires for years, and more and more fire appliances arrived to deal with the blaze, which took hold on the roof in a fresh north-west- erly breeze, and spread rapid- ly. Forty-six guests were regis- tered in the hotel, a late 19th century building, at the time of the fire but only 20 were actually in the hotel when the alarm was raised. * * * * * * DESPITE further letters of objection and a 300-signa-

strating a great reluctance to work with grant-maintained schools to find a solution to the problem of a surplus of pu- pils in the area. “They appear to disregard the best interests of children and seek to separate the chil- dren in the catchment areas of LEA schools from those in the catchment area of grant-main- tained schools,” he told par- ents. * * * * * * THIS week sees a major event in the history of the A&T – the newspaper has been printed on a different machine, though still on the company’s site. Formerly used for printing the Evening Ga- zette, Blackpool, it had been converted to the di-litho pro- cess of printing, so that heavy metal plates do not have to be cast and attached to the cyl- inders, and images can be re- produced photographically, in due course. Whilst the old rotary press could only produce a maxi- mum of 32 pages (16 plus 16), the new machine can print twice as many (32 plus 32) in one operation, up to the max- imum of 64 broadsheet pages. * * * * * * AS the result of a major po- lice investigation by one of their special search units, last- ing several days and nights, £100,000 of cannabis resin has been recovered from a remote site in the western New For- est. As a result, two local peo- ple were arrested on Tuesday, and further arrests followed on Wednesday in other parts of the country. “It looks as though we have cracked a major drug smug- gling ring,” a police spokes- man told the A&T.

AS already reported, the Ministry of Health has ac- cepted the negotiated price of £51,165 for the erection of 50 council houses at Highfield, Lymington, subject to savings of £20 per house. The council have approved the following contracts: Rash- ley and Co., 11 pairs of hous- es, £22,072; H. Champion six pairs of houses, £12,213; B. C. Forward, three pairs of bunga- lows, £4,558; F. J. Pearce, five pairs of houses, £11,322 — To- tal: £50,165. The contracts are exclu- sive of the cost of land and of roads, sewerage, etc. * * * * * * “IS there any possibility of New Milton being separated from the borough of Lyming- ton?” was a question asked at Lymington and Penning- ton Ratepayers’ Association’ meeting in the parish hall on Monday. The president, Field Mar- shall Sir Cyril Deverell, said he did not think the point arose at the moment, but the government had appointed a committee to go into the whole matter of local bound- aries. The mayor-designate, Capt. B. H. Goodhart, said the white paper on this subject showed that the general trend envis- aged was larger rather than small administration areas. “From a financial point of view it is quite obvious that a larger district with bigger re- sources can carry its burdens much better than a small one,” Capt. Goodhart continued. * * * * * * THE death occurred sud- denly on Sunday, at Buckland House, Lymington, of Mr Les-

ture petition, the South West Hants Divisional Planning Committee is maintaining its recommendation that outline planning approval be grant- ed for the development of the Marydale Convent site, off Hinton Wood Avenue, High- cliffe, by 19 detached bunga- lows, four detached houses, 44 flats, 22 terraced houses and one existing lodge. The application is now to be forwarded to the county plan- ning committee for reference to the minister of housing. At last month’s meeting of the committee, the divisional planning officer, Mr E. S. John - son, reported there had been 30 letters of objection from local residents. Some grounds of objection related to the gen- eral principle of development of the site, which it was felt should remain an open area, though the majority related to the form of development pro- posed which was felt to be of excessive density; out of char- acter with the adjoining bun- galow development; would re- sult in the removal of many fine trees on the site; and would Balmer Lawn Hotel fire in 1970

affect the privacy of adjoining residents and be likely to lead to property devaluation. Ob- jections were basically against the terraced houses and flats proposed, and bungalow were considered far more appropri- ate if the site was developed at all. * * * * * * ON Wednesday next, Octo- ber 28th, all the telephones in the New Milton area will be connected to the new au- tomatic STD exchange and, consequently, every subscrib- er will have a new six-digit number, of which the first two numbers will be 61. 25 YEARS AGO THE time had come when party political bias should be set on one side and the in- terests of children should be placed first, declared Gordon Skirton, head of New Milton’s Arnewood grant-maintained comprehensive school, on Tuesday. Speaking at Arnewood’s annual presentation evening, Mr Skirton accused the local education authority of demon-
