OLIVIA Mitchell and her horse Woodland Lad have defied the odds by overcoming multiple surgeries and injuries to make a winning return to competition. Over the last five years, Woodland Lad, known as Woody, has recovered from a torn deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), undergone surgery to remove a ruptured cyst from his elbow and had his right eye removed after it deteriorated due to glaucoma. Woody started jumping again recently, andheadjusted superbly. He managed to finish second in one of two BE90 competitions, which has jumps measuring between 90-95cm, before returning to BE100 action at Tweseldown, where he won his section on a superb dressage score of 24.3. In 2017, 19-year-old Olivia Mitchell, who is awaiting double knee surgery, and Woody were selected to represent the South West at the UK U18 Eventing Championships at Frickley
Park where the team finished third. They then picked up two podium finishes at the UK Pony Club Championships and finished third at the Blenheim Palace Horse Trials Eventers Challenge. A year later, the duo competed at Badminton and produced an excellent clear cross country round on a very tough track before being selected again for the South West at the UK U18 Eventing Championships. It was there that Woody tore his tendon which resulted in 16 months of rehabilitation. During this time he had an operation to remove a ruptured cyst which extended his recovery time by many months. Less than a month after returning to action, Woody’s right eye began to turn hazy blue and he was diagnosed with glaucoma. After attempts to save the eye were unsuccessful, it was removed in December 2019.

South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Div 3B Aldershot & Farnham HC 4 New Forest HC 4 NEW Forest Hockey Club’s first team continue to hunt their first win of the season after a hard-fought 4-4 draw with Aldershot & Farnham at Heath End School. Both sides battled hard throughout with neither leading by more than a single strike at any time. With Forest trailing 4-3, Lynn Jones hit the backboard to find a late equaliser. Aldershot started well and they subjected the New Forest goal to a barrage of shots, which led to the opening goal. Forest battled back and had the majority of the possession and chances. The visitors lost Octavia Allan to a nasty injury after colliding with an opposition player in a brave challenge. Eventually they found the breakthrough when Lia Waine converted a penalty corner after a slick routine. The second half began with plenty of chances from both sides. Keeper Becky Snook
made numerous saves, but Aldershot found a way through to take a 2-1 lead. Forest hit back almost immediately when Jade Lock scored with a reverse stick shot. New Forest then took the lead for the first time when Lauren Gavin and Waine played a neat one-two before the latter hit the backboard for 3-2. Within minutes Aldershot punished Forest with yet anoth-
er equaliser before scoring their fourth. The goal came in con- troversial circumstances after a hotly disputed referee decision. Forest refused to let their heads drop, and they battled with everything they had before Lynn Jones restored parity for the final time in the match.

The exception to this was the Ann Bland Trophy. The game had to be abandoned with com- petitors scrambling for cover from the driving rain, hail and thunder. MUDEFORD Phoenix U15s avenged last season’s loss and draw with an action-packed 6-3 win over Andover U15s away from home. Both sides looked to exert their dominance from the off, but Phoenix struck first when Abel played an excellent pass to Miller who scored low to the keeper’s right. Phoenix doubled the advantage soon after when Miller found Machado, whose firm shot was deflected into the goal off an Andover defender. Andover redoubled their efforts, and they were rewarded on 23 minutes when their striker ran on to a pass before directing the ball passed the onrushing Phoenix keeper. New Forest District Youth League U13 New Milton Robins Brockenhurst Raiders 4 NEW Milton Robins twice came frombehind to secure a 4-4 draw with local rivals Brockenhurst Raiders at Fawcett’s Field. Robins once again showed their battling instincts to come back from 2-0 and 4-3 and deservedly earn a draw. Robins even went close to snatching the win, but luck was not on their side. and Amy King showed decent concentration springing to action when called into action. Ivy Stevenson scored the final goal of the tournament against Romsey B. The B team performed excellently considering the majority were playing up two age divisions. The team played five matches and steadily improved as their confidence developed. Zach Hannam, Freddie Connor and Freddie Erdbeer provided the resilient defence, with Zach stopping a shot on goal in their match against Bournemouth 1. On the left-wing, Laurence Daley showed good pace while Philippa Todd and Ruby Coster were a solid midfield. Skye Grocott, Cecile Kent and Zia Snow were tenacious in the attack.
NEW Forest Hockey Club U10s A and B teams enjoyed a successful first tournament of the season with the As remaining undefeated and the Bs putting in many impressive performances. The A team played five games in total with 13 goals scored. Max Davis finished as the top scorer with an impressive seven goals, and Dan Salter scoring four. The most challenging contest of the day was probably against Bournemouth A, as Ollie Keeton scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Izzy Johnson, who typically plays in goal, showed the versatility in her game with superb outfield performance. Maxi Charlton, who recently joined the club, displayed his skills with super tackles and teamwork. In defence, Eliza Aarvold
Phoenix made it 3-1 when Miller cut in from the left wing before finding the top corner. Just before the break, Miller’s shot clattered off the bar for Abel to bury the rebound for her first goal of the season. Leading 4-1, Phoenix seemingly took their foot off the pedal and Andover gratefully found their way back into the game scoring two goals either
side of an Abraham wonder strike. Just after the hour mark, Phoenix put the game to bed when the player-of-the-match Miller completed her hat-trick. Mudeford Phoenix: M. Roff, Watkins, Strutt, S. Robins assistant coach Des Hjerling said: “Ethan was great today, he should take a lot of confidence from his performance and with extra training, he will improve further. “He’s brave, strong and willing, so that’s the core elements sorted. I’m sure that he will enjoy his player-of-the- match milkshake at Bake.” New Milton Robins U12s battled back to earn a draw against Ringwood Town Thunderbolts.
