 By Glynn Williams MBE, Motoring Correspondent “WHAT is the best used car model to buy if you cannot afford new?” is the perennial question to tax motoring experts. leaderboard, three cars shar- ing first place with a perfect 100% score, those worried about modern motoring technology should have their minds set to rest with nine hybrids and one electric car among the most dependable, proving that it is possible to buy a used car that’s both environmen- tally friendly and dependable.

Each person was asked if their vehicle had experienced a fault in the past 12 months, what area was affected, how much each fault cost to repair and how long the vehicle was off the road. Only cars up to eight years old were considered, because these account for more than half of all used car purchases. In the listings, the three top performing cars all achieved a perfect 100% reliability rating: the previous-generation versions of the Honda Jazz and Toyota RAV4 and the current Lexus RX. Japanese and Korean brands accounted for seven of the top 10, including four models from Toyota and its luxury division Lexus, and two from Hyundai. The top 50, meanwhile, included nine hybrids and the fully electric Jaguar I-Pace,. Across all models in the top 50, 21% of owners reported a fault, with non-engine electrical

gremlins the most common prob- lem, followed by the engine and its electrical systems and the car’s bodywork. In 68% of cases the cost of repairs was covered under war- ranty, with 36% of all cars drivea- ble and repaired in a day or less. The magazine’s used cars editor Mark Pearson said: “Reliability is one of the key concerns for most used buyers, because an unreliable car can quickly turn into an unwelcome headache. Fortunately, our top 50 list takes the hassle out of finding a depend- able secondhand car.” 

But fortunately the guesswork and personal opinions is taken out of the myriad of options from the thousands of models on the market using the latest research from one of the leading consumer champions, What Car?, in associa- tion with heycar, the online used car marketplace.
