Enter the Enyaq iV: Skoda launches first all-electric SUV
By Matt Lawrence, Motoring Correspondent MID-SIZE electric SUV debuts with two batteries and three interior design packs, AWD model on the way.
the Enyaq iV the svelteness of a Range Rover Evoque or BMW X2 but in a much larger package. Along its flanks and beltline, the Enyaq features a number of creases and crinkles typical of today’s penchant for heavily sculpted SUVs. The tailgate is just as angu- lar, with a clear score underlining the rear badging and separating it from the slightly sunken lower section that houses the number plate. As we have seen, battery sizes more than exte- rior and interior spec tend to govern how much you pay for an Enyaq. However, that’s not to say that higher-priced variants don’t offer their fair share of bonus equipment. For starters, the entry-level iV 60 comes with a fairly generous range of fixtures and fitting from the off, including 19-inch alloy wheels, an infotain- ment system with a 13-inch screen, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and keyless go. What’s more, road sign recognition, ambient inte- rior lighting, and a multifunction leather steering wheel are all to be found in the Enyaq’s standard armoury. Importantly, this most cost-effective way into the Enyaq iV range carries the smaller of the model’s two available batteries. With the 62kWh pack on board, the motor sends a plentiful 177bhp to the rear wheels via a single-speed automatic trans- mission. Range wise, this first rung on the line-up ladder will take you up to 242 miles on the WLTP cycle before requiring a recharge. Splashing out a little more – £35,950 once Westminster ways in with the EV grant – will get you the upgraded 82kWh battery pack and a sprinkling of extra standard goodies. Specifically, these iV 80 models throw in chrome detailing, front parking sensors and a rear-view camera on top of the stan- dard fare mentioned above. 80 models also come with a heated two-spoke leather steering wheel with flappy paddles to govern how aggressive you want your regenerative braking. The infotainment system also gets its own integrated satnav in iV 80 guise. In terms of power, the 82kWh battery sits at the heart of a rear-wheel-drive setup. On a single charge, it’ll get you 316 miles, putting it in the region of the most affordable long-range Tesla in Europe, the Model 3 LR. At 201bhp, it’s no slouch in the power department either. Later on in 2021, the four-wheel-drive iV 80X will
join the crew. Topping the range, it’ll come complete with a second electric motor mounted on the front axle, bestowing it with a rather sparky 262bhp. Each of the two-wheel-drive Enyaq iV variants slots its compact electric motor and battery pack snuggly beneath the floor. That layout leaves enough room for 585-litres of luggage in the boot – more than its stalemate the Karoq. In true Skoda fashion, the cabin promises to be equally as capacious, with Loft, Lounge and Suite interior design packs adorning the options list. The former offers your standard fabric-cum-artificial leather upholstery fare as well as aluminium panels and door trim. Otherwise, you can fork out a grand more of your hard-earned pounds to upgrade to Lounge or Suite trim. That adds light grey leather upholstery with mustard yellow stitching or piano black accents for the interior decor – whichever floats your boat. If you’re technically minded, a head-up display with windscreen-projected driving data can be added to the package, while a permanent internet connec- tion keeps all models up to date on the go. For the real early birds among you, the special edition Skoda Enyaq iV Founders Edition is avail- able exclusively from launch. On top of the regular fixtures and fittings, these advanced-guard models sport a set of chunky 21-inch alloys, an illuminated front grille in time for the Christmas switch-on and matrix LED headlights. The limited edition version checks in at £46,995, considerably more than either of the standard cars, but does get 125kW DC fast charging as standard. If a quick refill is paramount for you, then the 125kW option can also be combined with the iV 80’s 82kWh battery. It’s a significant step up from the standard-issue household 230V socket. Otherwise a wallbox charger with up to 7kW charging should get you back up to full capacity overnight. Depending on the battery size, a service station super charger replenishes 10 to 80 per cent of the battery in just under 40 minutes. Ahead of its UK arrival in spring 2021, order books for the all-new Skoda Enyaq iV open up later this year. The addition of a large electric SUV to the Czech brand’s roster should broaden its appeal handsomely, with precious few rivals out there at this price point offering so much space and practi- cality in a zero-emissions package.
Until now, Skoda’s EV offering has been some- what sparse. So sparse in fact, that the teeny tiny Citigo e iV is the only model in the Skoda fleet that’ll let you skip paying road tax- that is unless your favoured mode of transport happens to be a Czech-built lawnmower or steam car. In the event that you don’t fall into one of the above categories, but still fancy a bit of solid Skoda build quality and practicality, then allow us to be the bearers of good news. Revealed this autumn, the all-new Enyaq iV will be the Czech brand’s second fully-electric vehicle when it goes into service next spring – and its first SUV of the zero-emissions variety to boot. The Enyaq iV is based on the same underpin- nings as its platform-sharing buddies over at Volkswagen; namely the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV. Though it plainly markets itself as a tree-hug- ging, environmentally conscientious car first and foremost, on a more practical level the Enyaq is actually a very roomy SUV in its own right. Parked roughly between the Czech firm’s two large SUVs the Karoq and Kodiaq in terms of size, the new kid on the block towers over such EV SUV luminaries as the Kia e-Niro and Peugeot e-2008. So what’s the financial burden for stepping up from lightweight to cruiserweight? Just the £1000 as it turns out. Surely there must be a catch, right? In a word, no – at least not as far as we can gather. Starting at £30,450 after cashing in the gov- ernment’s £3000 plug-in car grant, the entry level Enyaq iV doesn’t feel like a scrimper at all. That’s probably down to the fact that Skoda’s new range of EV SUVs is based more around the size of the battery rather than the extravagance of the trim. Heavily reminiscent of the brand’s flagship Superb saloon, the front end of the Enyaq iV gets a hexagonal version of Skoda’s trademark barred grille and some smart squared- off bumper inserts. The roofline tapers off visibly towards
the back, in contrast to the more traditionally sculpted Karoq and Kodiaq SUVs, lending
a tree- hugging, environmentally conscientious car
