Giant-killers Christchurch make history in FA Cup FA Cup Second
Qualifying Round Christchurch FC Gloucester City
1 1
Christchurch won 6-5 on penalties
CHRISTCHURCH FC pulled off a shock giant-killing against Gloucester City to reach the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round for the first time in their history. The amateur football club, who play three divisions below National League North’s Gloucester City, took the lead with an hour gone when Max Wilcock headed in from close range. The visitors struck the woodwork three times before they found a breakthrough in the 93rd minute to send the match to penalties. After both sides had buried all their spot-kicks, Lewis Gunstone-Gray palmed away George Carline’s effort to spark jubilant celebrations. The Hurn Bridge side caused an upset in the previous round after coming back from a goal down to knock out Dorchester Town, who play two divisions higher in Southern League Premier South. They defeated Ascot United and Bashley FC in the preliminary rounds. In what was billed as the biggest match in Christchurch’s history, the visitors made a bright start, registering several chances, while Christchurch were met with solid defending whenever they made a foray into the opponents’ final third.

cup competition, and I feel so proud of our achievement. The players and the club have made history; we can’t wait to continue our story.” Christchurch FC have been handed a home tie against National League South side Dulwich Hamlet in the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round on 13th October. After progressing, Christchurch will pocket £3,375 in prize money. Due to the latest government announcements, Gloucester City supporters were unable to attend the match. There were 265 fans in attendance. Christchurch: L. Gunstone- Gray, M. Ohameje, H. Wright, R. Frost, B. Walker, B. Cherrett, B. Satterley, N. Swann, W. Fletcher, M. Wilcock, B. Hill.

crowd wild. After the match, Cherrett, told the A&T: “It was a very difficult game. All credit to Gloucester City as they are a very good side. “Our players gave everything and deserved the luck we got. To concede so late was hard but the penalties were excellent – what a great way to win the game. “The FA Cup is the best
With the end of the match in sight, Khaellem Bailey took the ball with his back to goal before cheekily back heeling into the bottom corner to level the game in stoppage time and set up a dramatic penalty shootout. Ollie Cherrett and Wayne Smith’s side held their nerve, scoring all six of their penalties before Gunstone-Gray saved to his right sending the home
struck the post twice more before Christchurch took a shock lead. The home side showed tremendous industry throughout, and this was on display when Nick Swann won the ball on the right before driving to the byline. He lofted a ball high to the back post to Wilcock who met the ball with a towering header, giving the Gloucester keeper no chance.
The first real chance of the match fell to Gloucester when Carline’s goal-bound header was cleared off the line. Christchurch found themselves limited to speculative long-range efforts while the visitors put two big chances narrowly wide before hitting the post. The second-half followed in the same vein with Gloucester going close several times. They

Dominant Lymington maintain winning start
Sydenhams Wessex Premier Lymington Town FC 8 Bournemouth Poppies 0 LYMINGTON Town FC continued their perfect start to the season with a thumping 8-0 win over Bournemouth Poppies at The Sports Ground. The victory extends Lymington’s winning run to four and puts them third in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier table. Only Fareham Town and Horndean have taken more points, with the two sides having played more games. In Town’s previous fixtures, the defence has taken the lion’s share of the plaudits. However, the home side looked lethal on every attack. Their impressive afternoon began with perhaps the quickest goal in Wessex football league history when Owen Fee beat the keeper with a left-foot thunderbolt from 20 yards after just 12 seconds. Minutes later Sam House thought he had extended the lead when he found the back of the net. However, the goal was disallowed for a push. Midway into the first half, Steve Flynn successfully doubled the lead after nodding the ball past Poppies’ Kacper Kowalczyk from close range. With 10 minutes left, Lymington’s Dom Falco won a penalty after Macauley Raney’s poor challenge. House showed no hesitation, converting to make it 3-0. He claimed a second minutes later when

Blackfield kept up the pressure, and Smith soon added his second by slotting underneath replacement keeper Harry Gravett after a mazy-run by Flavio Tavarez. With the final whistle moments away, second- half substitute Fawzi Saadi fortuitously added his name to the scoresheet after his shot ricocheted into the goal off a Bashley defender. The visitors looked to be finding their feet, and they went close with a half-chance on 16 minutes. However, any chance of rallying was made more improbable when Thompson received his marching orders after rushing out of his area and catching his man. With 10 minutes of the half left, Bashley forced Blackfield keeper Joe Bessant into action for the first time in the match with a 25 yard free-kick. Former Bashley player Speechley- Price doubled the home side’s advantage in the 38th minute when he punished Bashley’s inability to clear a corner by slotting home from close range. Bashley started the second half much brighter and looked likely to score until Blackfield added a third when Luke Bennett scored from a corner. With the game put to bed,

River Smith put the home side 1-0 up before Bashley’s Sammy Thompson was dismissed for a foul outside the area. Mitchell Speechley-Price added a second with half-time approaching before Blackfield took over with second-half goals coming from Jack Barton, Fawzi Saadi and a second for Smith. Bashley came into the match full of confidence after a resounding 6-0 hammering of Alresford Town on Saturday, but the wind was knocked out of their sails within two minutes when Smith got on the end of

his shot squirmed through the Bournemouth defence and into the bottom corner of the net. After the break, Poppies came out looking to restore some pride. However, any attempts were thwarted by the dominant home defence, with new signing Robin Nicholls patrolling the space in front of the back line, showing impressive touches in his full debut. Just before the hour mark, Fee outmanoeuvred his opponents to complete his brace after Falco released the winger down the right-hand side. With 10 minutes left,
second-half substitute Conrad Churchill added his name to the scoresheet. With momentum in their corner, last season’s top-scorer House completed his hat-trick with a low shot to the keeper’s left before he converted another penalty to complete the rout. Falco had been keen to take the spot-kick himself but, much to the striker’s frustration, a quick intervention from the dugout affirmed House as resident penalty taker. Lymington Town FCmanager Dave Lewis told the A&T: “We knew we had been playing
well, but we were keen to see improvement on the ball. “This missing ingredient was in abundance on Saturday, starting inside the first minute when Owen Fee rifled one into the top corner from outside the box. “This result has been coming for a while. But our feet are back on the ground ready for our next game.” Lymington Town FC: R. Casey, L. Churchill, D. Falco, O. Fee, S. Flynn, R. Fuller, S. House, N. Hurst, R. Nicholls, C. Stanley, T.
