Lightning-quick Makoni ‘will never be forgotten’

TRIBUTES have flooded in for a former Bashley player who was “a defender’s worst nightmare” and was described as a lovely man. Clive Makoni, who played for AFC Bournemouth at youth level, was pronounced dead at the age of 26 after his body was found in an Airbnb in Stockbridge last month. The pacey attacker started his football development at the AFC Bournemouth Football Academy before playing for several local clubs across Hampshire at non- league level. The Zimbabwean striker first appeared at Bashley FC in September 2014 following a period away from football after being released by AFC Bournemouth and leaving Dorchester Town. At the time Bashley were struggling at the bottom of the Southern League. The talented player, whom Bashley signed on a free transfer, soon became a fan favourite. Although the marksman scored the majority of Bashley’s goals that season, ultimately the club was relegated to the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League. Clive turned up for pre- season training the following year and played in the Dave Jose Trophy memorial match. However, he decided not to re-sign before moving on to Sholing FC. Following his death, Bashley FC held a minute’s silence before kick-off and released a statement on Twitter: “Everyone at Bashley Football Club is shocked and saddened to hear of the devastating news that former player Clive Makoni has sadly passed away. “Our thoughts are with Clive’s family and friends during this difficult time.” Bashley FC president Sydenhams Wessex Div One Ringwood Town FC 5 RINGWOOD Town succumbed to their second defeat of the season after being soundly beaten 5-2 by Newport at the Macra Community Stadium on Saturday. Newport have travelled well so far this season after taking seven points out of a possible nine on their travels. The visitors raced into a 4-0 lead before Ringwood striker Ryan Hamm scored the first of his two strikes. 2 Newport FC FRESH from their recent FA Cup heroics, Christchurch dis - pelled any hint of complacency with a comprehensive 4-1 vic- tory over Portland United on Tuesday. Christchurch started the bet - ter side, and deservedly found themselves two goals up at half- time. Bashley were pitiless as they subjected the Alresford Town defence to a barrage of attacks which saw the home side go close multiple times. Liam Farrugia rattled the crossbar with a header from a Lewis Ross corner, while the visitors tested Sammy Thompson in the Bashley goal. With three minutes of the half left, Brad Strickland floated a cross into the path of Farrugia who sprung into the air to deliver a perfect header into the net. In the final action of the half, McGrath received an elbow in the box which left him bloodied. With the incident unseen by the referee, it went unpunished. However, Beard was sin-binned for his opinion on the decision. Far from letting up, the home side started the second- half at a high tempo. With a quarter-of-an-hour gone, Alresford were down to 10- men when George Sheridan took out Brad Morris. Both men left the field, with the injured Morris replaced by Chris Onoufriou. Alresford Town’s Aaron Bufton was putting on an inspired display between the sticks, but Ross left him no chance when his textbook header put the game beyond

BASHLEYFChit sixgoalspast Alresford Town and recorded their second consecutive clean sheet to take all three points at the Glen Max Stadium on Saturday. The impressive result began with Cameron Beard winning a first-minute penalty before the home side raced into a 3-0 first-half lead. Alresford had a man sent off early in the second-half as Bashley refused to let up, to seal a six- goal winning margin. Within moments of the opening whistle, Cameron Beard drove through an unprepared Alresford defence before being up-ended in the penalty area. After coolly dispatching the spot-kick, Beard was ordered to retake it by referee Lewis Ward who intimated that an Alresford player had encroached the area. Fortuitously for Bashley, the decision, which appeared to punish the home team for the other’s misdemeanour, was not a costly one as Beard again converted. Within three minutes, Beard repeated his one-person cavalry charge before firing goalward. The saved shot rebounded to Harry McGrath,

and football secretary, Mike Cranidge, told the A&T: “Clive was one of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet. Polite, gracious, and unassuming yet somewhat distant, almost as if his thoughts were elsewhere. He was unique in being liked by all. “After his death, every comment on social media described him as a lovely man, but in reality, nobody knew the real Clive. Always together with the team, yet apart. He rarely spoke about family or matters outside of football. “Coming back on the ferry after a game on the Isle of Wight, I found Clive sitting alone. I joined him and we chatted the hour away; I found him articulate, knowledgeable and good company, but despite that time together, he somehow managed not to talk about himself. “With hindsight, that may not have been a good sign. I hope that we all learn that a smile and silence does not always mean everything is all right. We will never forget Clive Makoni.” A recent post-mortem report stated the preliminary cause of death as unascertained, and an inquest has been ordered to take place on 17th May next year. AFC TOTTON scored five goals to defeat Devon-based Willand Rovers in a match which was far more competitive than the scoreline suggested. The home side broke the deadlock when Brett Williams headed home to give his side an 11th-minute lead. Feeney added a second in the 39th minute before Williams, Freddie Read and Ethan Taylor all scored in the second-half to move the Stags into second place in the league. The match kicked off in an end-to-end fashion, but AFC Totton found the breakthrough first when Williams met Craig Feeney’s right-wing cross to beat Willand keeper Mike Searle and give his side the perfect start.
